Zap Stormspike's Arc

Zap ducked into the old stone arena before sunrise, the battered lightning text tucked under one arm. The cover showed a faded bird with a glowing tail, its pages crumbling at the edges. Zap wanted one thing: to turn the sparks in their hair into a real weapon, something Rustbottom would fear. They opened to the passage they had read forty times. "Call the hound from the storm inside you." Zap squinted. Maybe today it meant something new. Zap tried to spark on purpose. Nothing. They paced. They counted breaths. Still nothing. Then a loose stone clattered behind them, and panic flashed white through their hair. The discharge tore across the practice yard. A shape leapt out of the bolt — a dog made of crackling light, tail curved like a jagged arc. It bounded once, twice, then slammed through the wall of an empty house at the arena's edge. Splintered beams flew. A burning scar split the frame. Zap stared at the broken house, then at their shaking hands. The hound was gone, but it had been real. The magic answered fear, not will. And next time, fear might find a crowd.
