Zap Stormspike's Arc

The dust from the bird settled on Zap's boots. The teacher walked across the yard and stopped beside a tall measuring rod planted in the dirt. Faint scorch rings dotted a round iron target nailed to a post nearby. "This is where you have been aiming," the teacher said. The lowest mark on the rod glowed a dull, tired orange. The teacher pressed a pair of cushioned headphones into Zap's hands. "Put these on. They quiet the world. Panic feeds on noise." Zap slid them over their spiked hair. The yard went soft. Only their own breath remained. "Now. A small spark. On purpose. Aim for the target." Zap lifted a hand. Their fingers shook. They thought of the fish cart, the broken door, the bird. A weak thread of light hissed out and tapped the iron with a sad click. Another dent. No more. Again. Again. Twelve tries. Each spark thinner than the last. Zap's chest tightened. "It's not a weapon," they said. "It's barely a candle." Past the fence, a rusted electrical tower hummed in the distance, full of the power Zap could not reach. The teacher tapped the rod. The orange mark climbed one tick higher. Just one. "Control is not size," they said. "You called the bird back. You chose that spark. Today you did not panic once." They guided Zap to a small stone fire pit and sat them down by the flame. Zap stared at their quiet hands. The hair still crackled, but softly, like a held breath. The weapon was not here yet. But the trigger had moved, just a little, from fear to will. Tomorrow, the teacher said, they would try to make it bigger. Zap nodded, and for the first time, believed it.
