Chapter 1

Zara Veylinn had three days to reach the capital and claim a throne, and the road between her and it was rotting faster than she could walk. She crouched behind a fence post at the edge of a dead wheat field and watched the yellow-green fog eat another mile of ground. It moved like something breathing. Where it passed, the wheat blackened and folded in on itself. She pressed her mother's seal ring against her palm until the plain band bit skin. It looked like nothing. It was the only proof her bloodline had ever existed. She had planned for soldiers, for bribed clerks, for the family that had burned her home when she was six and taken the throne while she ran with smoke in her hair. She had not planned for this. The harvest moon rose in three nights, and the country was sickening ahead of it. Her witnesses waited in three different towns. Her documents were sewn into her coat. None of it mattered if she died in a field. Zara ran. The fog curled after her, low and heavy, faster than fog should move. She cut across a lane toward the only shelter in sight: a leaning shack with boards nailed sideways over its windows. She threw herself up the steps and shouldered the door. It gave. She slammed it shut behind her and listened to the miasma press against the wood. Inside, the shack smelled like old straw and mildew. A broken bedframe sagged in the corner, its mattress split open. Through a gap in the boards she saw the fog thicken at the threshold, testing the seams. A tendril slid under the door. She stepped back. Her lungs already felt wrong, hot and small. Three days shrank to hours. Then something moved between her and the door. It came up through the floorboards without breaking them, a dog-shape made of pale light, its outline drawn in faint blue veins. It faced the door and lowered its head. The tendril of fog touched the hound's chest and hissed away like water on a hot pan. The rest of the miasma pulled back from the seams. The shack went quiet. Zara did not move for a long moment. She had heard stories about the guardian hounds from her grandmother, who had said they answered old blood. She had thought her grandmother was softening the truth for a scared child. She knelt and held out her hand. The hound turned and pressed its cool, weightless nose against the seal ring. It stayed there. She understood then what she had. Not a road, not an army, but a thing that could walk her through the rot the usurpers did not know was coming. She wiped her face, stood, and looked toward the door. "We're going to the capital," she told the hound. It followed her out into the fog, and the fog gave way.
