Chapter 9

The herald's question hung in the hall. Zara slid the ring back onto her finger and lifted her satchel from where it hung at her hip. The leather was scuffed from the road and darkened at one corner where Zex's blood had soaked through when she carried him. She set it on the tiles at her feet and knelt on one knee to open the buckle. The guard in blue and gold stepped closer at her left. The taller guard in plated shoulders stayed at her right. The pale hound sat by her heel and watched the room. She drew the papers out in the order she had rehearsed a hundred times in the shack, in the townhouse, in the shuttered room where she had sewn the star-map skirt by candle. Birth register, copied by a clerk who was now dead. Marriage lines. A land grant in her grandmother's name with the old seal pressed into the wax. Three sworn letters from witnesses she had promised to protect. A ledger page torn from the treasury the night her family ran, showing the payment the usurpers had made to the men who set the fire. She carried them to the herald herself. She did not send a guard. She wanted the room to see her hands give the pages over. The herald took them and passed them to a clerk at a long table. The clerk laid them flat and began to read aloud, name by name, date by date. The hall stayed quiet. The man in the red sash leaned forward without meaning to. When the clerk reached the ledger page, he stopped. He read it again to himself. Then he read the line about the payment out loud, and a woman near the back of the hall put her hand over her mouth. Two nobles beside her turned their faces away. They had known the name on that page. They had eaten at his table. The herald looked up from the papers to Zara. He asked, formally, if she would swear before the court that these documents were true. She said she would. He asked if she would submit them to be sealed into the record. She said she would. He gave the order. The clerk stamped each page and slid them into a locked box on the dais. The box closed with a small iron sound. Her claim was on the record now. It could not be dismissed as theater. It could still be fought, but it could not be erased. Her bloodline existed in ink again, where the harvest moon could not reach it. A steward came in through the side door and crossed to her guard in plated shoulders. He spoke low. The guard turned to Zara and told her, quietly, that Zex Orionis had stopped breathing on the palace step. She had won the record. She had lost the man who signed his name to it.
