Chapter 14

Zeph ran east through the broken pines. His jaw throbbed. His shoulder burned where the enforcer's fist had cracked something loose. He kept the pace anyway. Behind him, Keji lay under the snow shelf with the white tiger crouched beside him, its blue-striped fur matted with blood. Ahead was a hall Zeph had never seen, a name his teacher had given him, and an ancestor he could not reach any other way. The trees thinned. The ground dropped. Zeph came around a shoulder of rock and saw it below him. A stone hall built into the ridge, wider than three barns, its roof green with age. An orange sun was cut over the door. Cracks ran through the walls. Weeds pushed up through the steps. He felt it before he was close, a low pressure under his ribs, as if the place were breathing with him. He climbed the steps and pushed the door open. Inside was one long room. Stone forms stood along the walls, carved fighters mid-strike, their faces worn smooth. Dust hung in the light. Zeph walked to the center and sat. He named the refusal. He named the stillness. He opened both doors and held. One count. Ten. Twenty. Thirty. He released and opened again. He chained the bursts the way he had learned. The hall answered. The pressure under his ribs spread out through the floor and up into his chest. Zento came. The ancestor stood in front of him this time, not a face in the dark but a small, solid man with white hair and pale eyes, a blue sash knotted at his waist. He was shorter than Zeph had expected. He did not smile. "You bled to get here," Zento said. "I could not reach you in the fight." "You will not. Not yet." Zento walked a slow circle around him. "The gold form has one door left for you. You have refused death. You have held still. Now you must refuse what you love." Zeph looked up. "Keji." "The old man. The tiger. The road home. Any hand you would take before your own." Zento crouched to his eye level. "The last door opens when you stand alone and choose to stand alone. Not out of anger. Out of knowing." "I can't leave him to die." "Then you will not go gold." Zento's face did not change. "Sit here until you understand. The hall will keep you. When you rise, you will know the price or you will know you cannot pay it." The ancestor faded. The pressure stayed. Zeph sat in the dust with his hands on his knees. His shoulder throbbed. Outside, the wind moved through the broken pines. He had reached Zento. He had his answer. He did not yet know if he could give what the answer asked.
