Chapter 24

The door stood open in front of Zeph. It was not a door of wood or stone. It was a rectangle of gold light hanging in the air at the far end of the chamber. He could feel it pulling at his chest, the way a strong wind pulls at a loose sleeve. Kaine watched from the wall, arms crossed. His yellow eyes were on the light, not on Zeph. "Walk through it," Kaine said. "That's all." Zeph stood. His legs were steady. The bracelet on his wrist was warm. He took one step and stopped. The light rippled. He did not know where to put his feet. He had opened doors before by naming a refusal. This one was already open. There was nothing to refuse. That was the problem. "It's shrinking," Kaine said. His voice stayed flat but the words came faster. "You paid for it. You have to claim it. Move." Zeph took another step. The gold edges of the rectangle pulled in a finger's width. His breath caught. He had spent every refusal he had. Keji. The tiger. The young Saiyan at the door. He had nothing left to push against. He reached for the old anger and it slid off him. He reached for stillness and the door shrank again. "Zeph." Kaine's voice was harder now. "You're thinking. Stop." Zeph closed his eyes. He saw his ancestor then, not in the chamber but behind his eyes. White hair standing up. Small body. Bare feet planted on nothing. The old man did not speak. He only lifted one hand and turned it palm up, the way a person offers a seat. Zeph understood. The door was not a test to pass. It was a place to stand. He had been trying to earn one more step. There was no more paying. There was only walking. He opened his eyes and moved. He did not run. He walked straight into the gold light with his hands loose at his sides. The rectangle caught him at the chest and passed through him like warm water. His hair lifted. The bracelet flared once and went cool. His skin felt tight, then loose, then his own again. When he turned, the light was gone. The chamber was ordinary stone. His shadow on the wall was edged in gold. He could feel a new weight sitting behind his sternum, quiet, waiting. Kaine came off the wall. He looked at Zeph a long moment. "You're inside it now. Not full. But inside." "How much is left?" "Enough that they'll come faster." Kaine walked to the outer door and set his hand on it. "Windchill felt that one too. Get up. We're not sleeping here tonight." Zeph stood. The bracelet on his wrist had gone dull. He rolled his shoulders once and followed his brother to the door.
