Chapter 3

The train let them off at a stone platform under a sky the color of slate. Master Keji walked ahead without looking back. Zeph followed, the gauntlet still warm on his right hand, the seams dim but awake. A path of set stones led up through pine to a squat stone building with runes cut into the lintel and colored gems worked into the walls. The old man pushed the iron doors open and stepped inside. The hall smelled of cold rock and old smoke. A ring of sand covered the floor. Torches lit themselves as Keji passed. He set the empty case on a bench and turned to Zeph. "Show me your gold form," he said. "I can't. I told you." "Then tell me what it is." Zeph opened his mouth and stopped. "Hair goes gold. Eyes change. You get strong enough to break anything." Keji's face did not move. "That's what a child hears at a festival. Who told you the rest?" "My grandmother. She said scream. She said grief." "Your grandmother told you the shape, not the door." Keji sat on the bench. "Sit." Zeph sat in the sand. "The old stories from Windchill are not one story. There are three forms people call gold, and each has a different key. One opens on rage — a friend dies in your arms. One opens on stillness — you stop wanting the change at all. One opens on refusal — you decide, in front of a killing blow, that you will not fall. Chase the wrong door and you burn your ki for years and get nothing." "Which one is mine?" "I don't know yet. Neither do you. That is the lesson." Keji drew three lines in the sand between them. "You've been beating on the rage door. It didn't open. So it is not that one, or not only that one." Zeph looked at the lines. His knuckles still ached from the platform. "So I stop trying?" "You stop guessing." Keji tapped the middle line. "Tonight you sit here until the sand under you is warm. No shouting. No punching. If nothing comes, we know more than we did." Zeph stayed. Keji left him a cup of water and closed the doors. He sat for hours. He did not scream. He watched the torches and let the anger drift up and pass. Near dawn the sand under his crossed legs held a low, steady heat. His hair did not change. His eyes did not change. But the loose feeling in his chest lined up the way it had in the gauntlet — without the gauntlet. Keji opened the doors and looked at the sand. He nodded once. "Not rage," he said. "Good. We know which door to stop knocking on. Tomorrow we test the next one." Zeph stood. For the first time, he was training toward the right form.
