Chapter 30

Zeph tried to stand and could not. His knees gave. He caught himself on his palms against the stone floor. The bracelet on his wrist was warm, but his arms shook under his own weight. The coal behind his sternum was ash. He had run east all night on legs that no longer belonged to him, and now Zento wanted him to train until dawn. "I can't," Zeph said. His voice came out thin. "I'll drop before I open the door once." Zento crouched in front of him. Up close his white eyes were steady. "You are right. Your body is finished. If you train through the night in this state, you will die on the floor before Windchill reaches the trees." Kaine stepped in from the doors. "Then what's the plan. He can't rest a full night. They'll be at the ridge by first light." "He rests part of it," Zento said. "But not the way you mean." Zento touched Zeph's chest with two fingers, over the place the coal should have been. "The old form does not come from the body. The body only carries it. Tonight you will not train the body. You will train the door." Zeph looked up. "How." "Sit against the wall. Close your eyes. I will hold the door open for you from the other side. You will only need to name who stands when no one else remains. Again. And again. Until naming it costs you nothing." Kaine helped him to the wall. Zeph slid down the stone. The bird on the beam ruffled its feathers and settled. Kaine put the bracelet flat against Zeph's palm and closed his fingers around it. "Sleep between the namings," Kaine said. "Even a breath of sleep. I'll wake you." Zeph closed his eyes. Zento's voice came from close and far at once. "Name it." "The one who stands when no one else remains." Something behind his sternum warmed. Not the coal. A smaller thing. A candle. "Again." He named it. The candle held. He drifted. Kaine shook his shoulder. He named it again. Each time the candle came faster. Each time his body took a small breath of rest between. Hours passed this way. The runes on the walls pulsed with each naming and dimmed while he slept. When Kaine woke him for the last time, the hall was pale with early light through the high window. Zeph stood without help. His legs held. The candle sat under his ribs, quiet, ready. "You did not master the form," Zento said. "You learned to reach for it without burning your body to do it. That is enough for what comes." Outside, far off, a horn sounded. Closer than before. Kaine lifted the bar from the doors.
