Chapter 5

They left the stone hall before the sun cleared the ridge. Zeph carried water and a blanket. Keji carried nothing. They walked into the pines and climbed until the ground turned to frost. Zeph's hand still tingled from the night before. He kept opening and closing his fist, waiting for the speed to come back. It did not. Keji stopped in a clearing ringed by black rock. Snow lay in patches. "You moved once," he said. "One second. If hunters come tonight, one second will not save you. You need to call it. Show me." Zeph closed his eyes and tried to find what he had found in the hall. The fist in the chest. The decision. He reached for it and grabbed nothing. He pushed harder. Still nothing. His shoulders locked. His breath went short. "You're chasing it," Keji said. "Refusal is not a muscle you flex. Sit down." Zeph sat on the cold stone. Keji crouched in front of him. "Rage answers a threat. Stillness answers silence. Refusal answers a thing you will not accept. You cannot summon it by wanting power. You summon it by naming what you will not allow." "I don't know what that is." "Then find it before something finds you." A branch cracked at the edge of the clearing. Zeph turned. A tiger stepped from the pines. Its fur was white, cut with pale blue stripes that caught the light like wet glass. It was bigger than any animal Zeph had seen. It walked into the clearing without hurry and stopped ten paces away. Keji did not move. "Don't run." Zeph's hands went cold. He knew the gauntlet was locked in a case behind them, hours away. He had his body and nothing else. The tiger lowered its head. Its shoulders rolled. "Keji." "I won't help you. Name it." The tiger sprang. Zeph saw the whole line of the leap — the paws leaving stone, the mouth opening, the blue stripes stretching along its ribs. He thought, very clearly, I will not be eaten in a field while my teacher watches. Not that. Not today. The fist closed in his chest. His body moved before he chose it. He stepped inside the leap, drove his shoulder up under the tiger's jaw, and threw it sideways into the rock. The animal hit hard, rolled once, and stood. It shook its head. Then it looked at him, turned, and walked back into the pines. Zeph stayed on his feet. His breath was steady. His hand was warm, not tingling. Keji straightened. "You named it." "I did." "Do it again tomorrow. And the day after. Until the word comes before the leap." Keji looked at the trees where the tiger had gone. "That was not a wild animal. That was a test I called. The next one I don't call. Hunters are still coming. You have the key now. You do not yet have the door." Zeph opened his hand and closed it. This time the warmth stayed.
