Chapter 50

The tall thing at the tree line lowered its head and charged. Two more came behind it, shoulders wrong, arms too long. Zeph felt the steady gold along his arms and did not reach for more. He walked to meet them. Kaine moved wide to the right, blades out, taking the smallest of the three. Zeph met the first one on open ground. It swung a heavy arm at his head. He stepped inside the swing and drove a fist into its ribs. Bone gave. The creature staggered. He did not chain a name. He did not burn. The gold stayed with him at the same level, warm along his skin, quiet in his chest. The second one came from his left. Zeph turned and caught its wrist. It was stronger than he expected. The pull dragged him a step. The steady gold held. He twisted the arm down and broke it at the elbow. The creature screamed and fell. The first one rose and came again. Zeph let it come close, then stopped it with a palm to the throat. Its weight pressed his heels into the wet grass. He held. He did not shake. He drove his other fist up under its jaw and put it down for good. Across the clearing, Kaine was on one knee. His blade was in the small creature's neck, but the creature had its claws in Kaine's shoulder. Kaine wrenched the blade free and shoved the body off. Blood ran down his arm. The second creature, one arm hanging, tried to crawl into the trees. Zeph walked after it and finished it with a heel to the skull. He stood in the quiet and listened to his own breath. Even. The candle in his chest was still a lamp. He had fought three at once and the gold had not slipped once. Kaine got to his feet, holding his shoulder. "That was different." "I didn't pull," Zeph said. "I stood on the floor and let it come." He pressed two fingers to the bracelet and opened the door a hand's width. The shaft dropped away. The boy sat on flat stone at the bottom, palms on the rock, gold hair bright. Zento stood behind him. "You carried," Zento said. "Against three. It held." "It will hold against more. This is not the full form. It is the ground the full form stands on." "How much more can I carry?" "As much as the boy can give. He is not empty yet." Zeph opened his eyes. Kaine was tying a strip of cloth around his shoulder with his teeth. In the pines, a fourth horn sounded, deeper than the third. Closer than the others had been at the start. "They sent something bigger," Kaine said. Zeph looked east. The gold along his arms did not flicker. "Good," he said. "I can carry it now."
