Chapter 1

Zephyr Lumina found the blood before they found the boy. A red trail cut across their forest, past the traps their people set for prowlers. Zephyr followed it fast. For years they had dreamed of the day humans stopped fearing purple skin. A dead human on their land would kill that dream. It would give the humans a reason to burn everything. The wounded one lay against a root, a boy in a green hood, arrows spilled from the quiver on his back. His leg had torn open on a snare. His eyes were half shut. When he saw Zephyr's purple hand reach for him, he tried to crawl away. "Monster," he whispered. "Stay back." "You'll die if I do," Zephyr said. They pressed both hands to the wound. The boy screamed, then went quiet. Zephyr had no medicine strong enough here. The nearest human healers worked hours away, and no human patrol would take a bleeding boy from purple hands. They would only see a captor. So Zephyr chose. They pulled a worn traveler's cloak from their pack, the one they had sewn to hide their skin among humans. They wrapped the boy in it, hood and all. Then they lifted him and ran. The boy woke against Zephyr's shoulder as the trees thinned. "Where," he breathed. "Where are you taking me?" "To your people. Before you bleed out." "They'll shoot you." "I know." Zephyr kept running. The human outpost came into view, torches and a wooden gate. Guards raised bows the moment they saw the cloak move. Zephyr slowed. They set the boy down on the grass, in the torchlight, where the guards could see he still breathed. "His name?" Zephyr asked him quietly. "Finn," the boy said. "Finn Hawkridge." Zephyr lowered the hood from Finn's face so the guards would know him. Then they lowered their own. Purple skin caught the torchlight. Bows creaked tighter. "He's hurt," Zephyr called. "A snare in my forest. I carried him. I did not cut him." No one fired. A healer pushed through the gate and dragged Finn inside. The boy twisted back once, staring at Zephyr with something that was not fear anymore. "It's true," Finn told the guards, his voice thin. "The purple one saved me." The guards did not lower their bows. But they did not shoot. One of them spoke, low and hard. "You brought him back. So walk away breathing. Come closer and you won't." Zephyr stepped back into the dark. The boy lived. The blame was gone. But now a whole outpost had seen a purple face and a human who spoke for it, and rumor traveled faster than any patrol. By morning both peoples would be talking. Zephyr had wanted a door to open. They had just kicked one down, and they did not yet know what waited on the other side.
