Ziggy stood in the training circle, wings folded tight, watching a thin ribbon of flame dance above their open palm. The fire twisted left when they wanted right. It flared when they needed it dim. Someone was coming—someone who needed what Ziggy couldn't yet give. The stranger arrived at dawn, collapsing beside the water pool at the edge of the training grounds. She clutched a cloth bundle to her chest, her face streaked with ash. "Only phoenix flame can save her," she said, voice cracking. "Not just any fire. Shaped fire. Controlled fire." Ziggy's wings trembled. The flame in their palm guttered and surged, responding to fear instead of will. They knew what happened when fire had its own way. The stranger's eyes held the same desperate hope Ziggy had learned to avoid—the kind that turned to ash when things went wrong. But the woman was already unwrapping the bundle, revealing a child's face, pale and still, and Ziggy felt control slip further from their grasp.
