Chapter 3

The new shop smelled like grass and honeysuckle now. Zinnia had poured her own candles and lined them on clean shelves. She had lilac ones that carried charcoal and sweet tea. She had a trio inspired by park air, green and sharp. The scents were good. But the shop was empty. People came in, sniffed, smiled, and left. Nobody stayed. Zinnia stood by her counter and watched the door swing shut for the fifth time. There was nowhere to sit. There was nothing to hold them. A short winged woman marched in with a clipboard bigger than her body. Her sash rattled with festival badges. Milo Nara ran the daily singing at the poppy meadow, and she never let a field go quiet. Zinnia knew her by reputation. Milo planned things that other people botched. She walked the length of the shop in six steps and stopped. "Nice smell," Milo said. "Empty room. You have chairs?" "No," Zinnia said. "Then nobody stays. People sit, then talk, then buy. That order. Every time." Zinnia opened her mouth to argue. She could talk anyone into anything. But Milo was already writing. "I lost two vendors once," Milo said. "Cooling grid broke. Forty-two acts, shut field. I fixed it by morning. You fix this by morning too." "How?" Zinnia asked. "One long bench. Cupholders built in. Candle slots along the top. People sit, hold tea, watch your flames. They stay for the flames." Milo tapped the counter. "I have a builder. He owes me. Tonight." Zinnia looked at her empty floor. She had spent most of her money on the cart. A bench felt like a risk she couldn't measure. But she pictured it. A row of small fires. Cups of tea steaming beside them. People leaning in to talk. "Do it," Zinnia said. Milo made one call and gave clipped orders. By dusk two workers carried in a long wooden bench. Cupholders ran down its middle in a row. Between them sat brass slots for candles. Zinnia set her lilac tea candles in the slots and lit them. She dropped the park-air trio at the ends. The bench glowed warm along its whole length. Milo checked her clipboard and left without goodbye. Zinnia sat on her own bench. It held her. It felt like a place. She propped the door open. A neighbor drifted in, drawn by the light. She sat. Zinnia handed her tea. The woman held the warm cup, watched the small flames, and did not stand up. A second person came. Then a third. They sat along the bench, shoulder to shoulder, talking over their cups. For the first time, Zinnia's shop was not empty at closing. People stayed. But the bench sat only eight, and by nightfall twelve wanted a seat. Zinnia watched four stand near the door, waiting. She had made a place worth staying. Now she needed room for everyone who came.
