Chapter 1

Edmund Ashworth stood in the empty storefront on Rue de la Victoire, his green eyes scanning the bare walls and dusty floorboards. He straightened his military coat and pulled a folded sketch from his pocket. The drawing showed elegant leather chairs, polished wood panels, and gentlemen gathered in conversation. This would be Belgique Lavenderai's first true gentleman's club, and he would be its founding member. His fingers traced the lines of his vision. The space was perfect. Outside, a crowd had gathered near an unusual tree with curved stairs wrapping around its base. Edmund climbed the steps, his boots tapping against the wood. He reached the small platform at the top and turned to face the street. Twenty gentlemen in various styles of dress looked up at him. Some wore top hats, others carried walking sticks. Edmund cleared his throat. "I'm establishing a club for distinguished gentlemen," he announced. His voice carried across the morning air. "A place for conversation, games, and refinement." He gestured toward the storefront behind him. "The building will feature Art Deco style with wooden doors and stained glass windows." Several men nodded with interest. One adjusted his spectacles for a better look. Edmund descended the stairs and led the group to the storefront. He unlocked the door and pushed it open. "We'll start with chess matches and card games to find our founding members." The men filed inside, their footsteps echoing in the empty space. Edmund watched them explore the room, pointing at walls and discussing possibilities. His club was beginning. The first members had arrived.

Chapter 2

Edmund stood at the center of the empty storefront, holding a leather notebook. He needed to understand what made a proper gentleman's club work. His military training had taught him discipline, but this was different. He opened the notebook and wrote his first entry: "Rules and Standards." The pencil scratched across the page as he listed requirements for membership. Good character. Respect for others. A love of refined conversation. He paused and looked around the bare room. Before members could gather here, he needed to create the right atmosphere. The space felt cold and unwelcoming now. Edmund closed the notebook and tucked it under his arm. Tomorrow he would find craftsmen to help build his vision. Today, he had learned what came first—the foundation of rules and standards that would guide everything else. The next morning, Edmund walked through unfamiliar streets until he found what he'd been searching for. The library rose before him, its stone columns and arched windows matching the grand structures he'd read about. Inside, the smell of old books filled his nose. He climbed the wooden stairs to the reference section. His fingers traced the spines until he found volumes on etiquette and social conduct. Edmund pulled three books from the shelf and carried them to a reading table. The first chapter explained proper introductions between gentlemen. He copied notes into his notebook, his pencil moving quickly. Outside the library, gas lamp posts lined the walkway, their metal frames twisted into decorative patterns. Edmund studied how they stood at regular intervals along the path. Members would need to arrive safely in the evening. He measured the distance between two posts with his stride—ten paces exactly. The warm glow they cast would welcome guests approaching the entrance. He wrote the measurement in his notebook and sketched a quick diagram. That afternoon, Edmund discovered a craftsman's shop displaying furniture through its front window. Inside sat an ornate drinks bar with carved details and a polished surface. Edmund pictured it outside the clubhouse during receptions. Guests could gather around it before entering. The craftsman noticed him staring and stepped outside. Edmund explained his vision for the club. The man nodded and offered to create similar pieces. Edmund shook his hand firmly. He had found his first supplier, learned the conduct rules he needed, and understood how to welcome members properly. The dream was taking shape, one careful step at a time.

Chapter 3

Edmund walked along the cobblestone streets, searching for inspiration. He had rules and suppliers, but he needed to understand the soul of Belgique Lavenderai. A proper gentleman's club should reflect its city's character. He turned a corner and stopped. Before him stood a grand structure with marble columns and bronze doors. The architecture spoke of tradition and permanence. Edmund stepped closer, studying the craftsmanship in every detail. This was what his club needed—that same sense of dignity and lasting value. He pulled out his notebook and sketched the doorway's proportions. The city itself was teaching him what distinguished truly meant. He continued walking until he reached the town square. A fountain rose from the center, water cascading over marble tiers. At its heart stood a golden statue of a gentleman holding his top hat high above his head. The figure smiled with pride and purpose. Edmund circled the fountain, reading the plaque at its base. It honored the founders of the city's first institutions. Men who had brought people together and created something lasting. Edmund traced the engraved letters with his finger. His club would do the same—give gentlemen a place to gather and build connections. The afternoon led him past a building with an elegant plaque beside its entrance. The Art Deco patterns caught the sunlight, their bold letters announcing a scholarly library. Edmund admired how the design invited refined men inside while declaring its serious purpose. His club needed something similar—a sign that would tell visitors what they could expect. He sketched the plaque's patterns in his notebook, paying attention to how the letters stood out clearly. First impressions mattered. Members should know they were entering a place of quality before they stepped through the door. As evening approached, Edmund found himself outside an Art Deco gaming venue. Through the windows, he watched men sitting at card tables and game boards, laughing and shaking hands after matches. The space blended competition with friendship perfectly. Edmund pressed his hand against the cool glass. This was the final piece he'd been missing. His club needed activities that brought gentlemen together naturally. Games created conversation and tested skill while building bonds between players. He stepped back from the window and opened his notebook one last time. Today Belgique Lavenderai had shown him everything his club required—dignity in design, pride in purpose, clear identity, and shared experiences. He had found his complete vision.
