Chapter 1

River Glidewell straightened their festive vest and stepped up to the wooden counter. The otter had one dream: to become the top salesperson at Arctic Boughs' Fine Dining Restaurant shop. Every day they practiced their pitch, memorized product details, and smiled at every customer who walked through the door. Today was different. Management had installed a new glass counter near the entrance, sleek and covered in holiday decorations. Snowflakes and candy canes gleamed under the shop lights. This would be River's station, their chance to prove themselves. They ran their paw along the smooth surface and grinned. The top salesperson always worked the front counter, where customers first walked in. River adjusted their name tag and took a deep breath. This was it—their opportunity to show everyone what they could do. The counter sparkled. River was ready.

Chapter 2

River's first task was simple: learn the menu inside and out. They grabbed the leather-bound book from beneath the counter and flipped it open. Roasted pine nut salad, arctic char with honey glaze, cranberry tarts—each dish had a story. River read every description twice, then said them out loud. Their whiskers twitched as they practiced the right tone, friendly but professional. A customer would ask questions, and River needed answers ready. They closed the book and smiled. Knowing the products was step one. Tomorrow, they'd practice on real people. The next morning, River stood outside the shop with a toolbox. Snow had started falling overnight, and white flakes covered the display tables. The merchandise needed protection. River hauled out a display case with a wooden frame and glass doors. They lifted it onto the table and checked the seal. The glass kept the products visible while blocking wind and snow. River placed gift boxes inside and latched the doors shut. Customers could see everything without the goods getting wet or cold. River stepped back and noticed people walking past without stopping. They needed something to catch attention. A chalkboard with a wooden frame sat propped against the wall. River grabbed it and carried it to the front of the display. They wrote "Daily Deals" in white chalk across the black surface. The sign was clear and easy to read from the path. River added the shop hours below and underlined them twice. Now people would know when to stop by. River dusted the chalk from their paws and grinned. The display looked sharp, and the information was right there for everyone to see. Step two was done.

Chapter 3

River walked through the back halls of Arctic Boughs, studying how the restaurant worked. The kitchen buzzed with energy as chefs plated dishes. Servers moved quickly between tables, carrying trays of food. River watched a waiter describe the daily special to a couple by the window. The customers nodded and smiled, then ordered it. That was the skill River needed—connecting people to products they'd love. The dining room showed what success looked like. Happy customers meant repeat business, and repeat business meant sales. River's whiskers twitched with determination. The shop counter was just the beginning. Near the staff entrance, River spotted something that made them stop. A wooden board hung on the wall with names carved into its surface. Gold leaf caught the light around each name. River stepped closer and read the labels: top salespeople from past seasons. Their paw traced the carved letters. These workers had proven themselves, month after month. The board showed what was possible. River's name could be up there too, if they worked hard enough. This was proof that the dream was real. Other people had done it. River could too. That evening, River helped set up a lantern outside the warehouse entrance. The glass was thick and frosted, with decorative branches wrapped around the stem. When lit, it glowed bright enough to see from across the town square. The warehouse held overflow stock for the shop, and customers needed to know where to find it after dark. River adjusted the lantern until it sat level, then stepped back. The warm light spread across the snow. People would see this and know where to go. River smiled. Every detail mattered. Every improvement brought them closer to that wooden board with the gold letters. The path was clear now.

Chapter 4

River stepped behind the shop counter and lifted a tray of sample crackers from the shelf. Guests needed to taste the products before buying. The crackers were topped with smoked fish and herbs from the kitchen. River arranged them in neat rows on a wooden serving board. Each piece looked identical, clean and appetizing. A small card beside the tray explained the ingredients in simple words. River straightened the card and stepped back. When customers tried the food, they'd understand the quality. That understanding turned browsers into buyers, and buyers into regulars who'd come back for more. The shop manager had asked River to help with a new display that morning. A vibrant arrangement of indoor edible plants hung in festive pots along the wall. The plants added color and life to the space. River adjusted each hook until the pots hung level. The greenery made the shop feel warmer despite the cold outside. Customers stopped to look at the plants before browsing the products. River noticed one pot held a cushion plant with tiny purple blooms. The plant formed a tight dome shape, built to survive harsh conditions. River touched the edge of the pot and smiled. Something small could still be strong. That afternoon, River sold three gift boxes to a couple looking for souvenirs. They'd asked about the ingredients, and River answered every question without hesitation. The couple left happy, and River marked the sale in the logbook. Three more customers meant three more steps toward the top of that board with the gold letters. River glanced at the cushion plant on the wall again. It didn't need much to survive—just resilience and the right approach. River had both. The path forward was clear, and each sale proved they belonged here.
