Tom Hendricks's dream is expanding the history museum into a top veteran memorial center.
Tom Hendricks gripped his cane and stared up at the museum's faded sign. His white feathers ruffled in the morning breeze. The building looked tired, forgotten. He wanted to change that. His dream was simple: turn this place into the best veteran memorial center in the state. He pulled a folded paper from his coat pocket. The sketch showed his vision clearly. The old brick edifice would stand proud again. He pictured the Australian and Red Ensign flags flying out front. The Veteran Heritage Center, he'd call it. A place where people would remember. Where stories wouldn't fade like old paint. Tom's talons gripped the cane tighter. This museum deserved better. The veterans deserved better. He'd make it happen, one step at a time. Tom pushed through the front door. The hinges squeaked. Inside, he walked past empty display cases and dusty shelves. He stopped at the back office where boxes lined the walls. His yellow eyes focused on the space. This could work. He imagined a recording station here, sleek and modern. Cameras and microphones to capture the voices of veterans. Their stories needed to be saved before time took them away. He nodded to himself and moved on. Outside in the courtyard, weeds grew between cracked pavers. Tom swept his cane across the ground. He pictured a carved wooden bench sitting right here. A memorial bench where veterans could rest and talk. Where friends could gather and share what they'd been through. Tom looked back at the brick building, then at the empty courtyard. The work ahead was massive. But he'd spent years planning this moment. Now it was time to start building.
Tom pulled a worn notebook from his coat pocket and flipped it open. The first page read "Step One: Learn Everything." He needed to understand what made other memorials work before he could build his own. His talon traced down a list of places to visit—war museums, veteran centers, memorial gardens across three states. He'd written phone numbers, visiting hours, and names of people to meet. Tomorrow he'd start making calls. Today, he needed to organize his research and map out his route. Tom sat at the museum's front desk and spread out his papers, ready to begin. By afternoon, Tom had marked six locations on his map. One address caught his eye—a memorial center two hours north. Their brochure showed a wooden gazebo tucked among wildflowers. Veterans gathered there to share stories and find peace. The railings were carved with ivy and cats, each detail chosen by the community. Tom circled the address twice. He needed to see how they'd built something that drew people in. He picked up the phone and dialed the number. A voice answered, and Tom explained his mission. They invited him to visit next week. He hung up and checked the item off his list, then reached for the next number. Tom kept calling through the afternoon. Each memorial center had something to teach him. One place used bright floodlights to host ceremonies after sunset. Families gathered in the evenings when work was done. The director explained how the lights made visitors feel safe and welcome. Tom scribbled notes about wattage and installation costs. Another center showed him photos of their memorial stone blocks. Each stone held a hundred names, carved deep and clear. Families came to trace the letters with their fingers. Tom added both ideas to his notebook. His list of things to learn kept growing. The sun dropped low through the museum windows. Tom leaned back in his chair and studied his notes. Six visits planned. Dozens of ideas to explore. His wings ached from hunching over the desk all day. But now he had a real starting point. He knew where to go and what questions to ask. Tom closed his notebook and tucked it back into his coat. The dream felt closer now. He grabbed his cane and stood. Tomorrow the real learning would begin.
