Chapter 1

Alessandro Moretti wanted to make Dreamscape Wonderland the most loved park in Japan. But this Saturday, he counted only nine people through the gate by noon. He stood under the grand pastel archway, holding a stack of maps no one wanted. A woman took her son's hand and steered him back toward the parking lot. She did not even glance at the ticket booth. Something was driving guests away, and Alessandro could not name it. His father passed behind him, calling out to a family. "Benvenuti! Welcome, welcome!" His father's smile was wide. But Gianluigi did not slow down when he reached his son. He clapped Alessandro's shoulder and kept walking. "Keep smiling, eh? People come for the smile." Then he was gone. Alessandro looked at the thin crowd. His father blamed the smile. Alessandro did not believe that was the problem. He decided to find out for himself. He set down his maps and walked into the park like a guest. He watched. The pastel carousel spun with three empty saddles. The miniature train sat still, its cheerful cars locked. A father tapped the train's fence and read a small sign. Alessandro walked over and read it too. CLOSED. UNDER REPAIR. The paper was curled and gray. It had hung there a long time. "How long has this said that?" Alessandro asked. The father shrugged. "Third time we've come. Third time it's closed." His boy stared at the still train and said nothing. They left. Alessandro kept walking. He found two more rides roped off. He found a snack stand with the shutter down at lunchtime. None of it was in the maps he handed out. Guests paid full price. Then they hit locked gate after locked gate. That was the honest answer. The park promised more than it gave. That evening he found his mother at the kitchen table. Misa Moretti sat with Miyuki beside her, weekly reports spread out between them. Pens, papers, a calculator. Misa marked a line and looked up. "Half the attractions are closed," Alessandro said. "The train. Two rides. A stand. And nobody fixes the signs." Misa set down her pen. "I know the rides are down." "But guests don't know until they're inside," Miyuki said. She turned a page toward Alessandro. "Look. Repeat visits dropped every month this year." Her finger followed the falling numbers. "Same months the closures piled up." Misa studied her son. "You walked it yourself." "Yes." "Good." She tapped the report once. "That's the leak. People pay, then hit a locked gate, then never come back." Her voice went flat and final. "Numbers don't lie." Alessandro felt the answer settle in his chest. He knew what was wrong now. But knowing was the easy part. He could diagnose a jammed carousel with his hands. Fixing a park full of dead rides was another thing entirely. And his father still thought the only problem was a smile.

Alessandro knew the leak now. Guests paid, then hit locked gates, then left. But knowing meant nothing if his father would not listen. On Monday, before the gate opened, he found Gianluigi at the coaster. His father stood below the looping pastel rails, counting empty seats with his lips. "Papa," Alessandro said. "I know why people stop coming back." Gianluigi did not turn. "The smile," he said. "You give them the smile, they come. Simple." "No. It's the closed rides." Alessandro held up a folded stack of papers. "The signs stay up for months. Guests pay full price, then find the train locked. The stand shut. This coaster roped off. They don't come back because we promise things we don't give." His father waved a hand. "Your sister, she would not worry so much. Go hand the maps, eh?" That stung. It always did. But Alessandro did not fold the papers away this time. He unfolded them instead. He spread the reports across a bench near the coaster. Miyuki's numbers. The falling repeat-visit line. Every month matched to a new closure. "Look," Alessandro said. "You don't have to trust me. Trust the numbers. Miyuki tracked every month. When a ride closed, repeat visits dropped. Not a guess, Papa. A pattern." Miyuki stepped up beside him. She had come early, before her own school day. She did not soften it. "He's right," she said. "The data says it plain. The smile isn't the problem." Gianluigi looked at the bench. He looked a long time. His finger followed the line down, month by month, the way Miyuki's had at the kitchen table. Near the coaster, Mr. Starwhisker practiced a slow bow to an empty row of seats, then straightened, watching. "Fix the carousel jam last month," Gianluigi said slowly. "That was you." Alessandro stopped. "You knew?" "I saw the tools after. I said nothing." His father rubbed his beard. "I build two sons in my head. Your mother tell me this. Maybe she is right." He tapped the report. "This. This is real work." He stood straight and faced Alessandro. "You walked the park. You found the leak. So you fix it." He pulled a ring of keys from his pocket and pressed it into Alessandro's hand. "Every closed ride. Every dead sign. You run it. Not the gate. This." Alessandro closed his fingers on the keys. They were heavy and cold. For the first time, his father was looking at him, not past him. "I won't waste it," Alessandro said. "I know," Gianluigi said. Then he walked off to open the front gate, and did not tell Alessandro to smile. Mr. Starwhisker gave a proud little bow toward the bench, as if congratulating it. Alessandro looked at the keys, then at the silent coaster above him. His father finally trusted him. Now the whole broken park was his to fix, and he had no idea where to start.
