Alexander Nightclaw wanted a crown that could end the wars. But no rival pack knelt to a king who slept under open sky. He crouched in the ruins of an old wolf temple, one hand on the cracked stone jaw carved above the door. Rain leaked through the broken roof. Three days ago, an envoy from a southern pack had come, looked at his camp of tents, and laughed. "Show us your walls," the man had said. "Then we'll talk about your throne." Alexander had no walls. That was the whole trouble. He traced the old carvings with his claw. Wolf faces stared back from the stone, worn but proud. Someone had built this place to last. The foundation still held, deep and level under the moss. He pictured towers rising from it. Spires shaped like wolves. A keep dark enough to make rivals bow before they spoke. Boots splashed behind him. Marcus Greystone ducked under the fallen arch, his gray fur soaked, a vest full of buckles clinking. He was Alexander's beta, the one wolf who had never once questioned his king to his face. He questioned him now. "You want to build here?" Marcus wiped rain from his snout. "On a pile of rocks nobody's touched in a hundred years?" "The foundation's sound. Feel it." Alexander stamped the stone. It rang solid. "They laughed at tents, Marcus. They won't laugh at obsidian." Marcus frowned at the huge job ahead. Then he crouched and pressed his palm to the floor. "It doesn't shift," he admitted. "Not even under your fat foot." A small black shape darted between the pillars. A pup, no taller than Alexander's knee, shaggy and quick. It sniffed the carved wolf jaw, then sat inside the doorway as if it owned the place. It did not run. It looked up at Alexander and waited. Marcus laughed. "Even the pup picked this spot before you did." Alexander knelt by the pup. "Then it's decided." He stood and faced his beta. "We build the keep on this foundation. Stone by stone. You'll gather every wolf who can lift a rock." Marcus stood too. The doubt left his face. "How long do we have?" "The southern envoy returns at the next full moon." Alexander looked out through the broken roof at the gray sky. "When he comes, I want black towers waiting for him. Not tents." They worked through the night. Marcus called in wolves from the surrounding hills. By dawn, the first blocks of dark stone sat squared upon the ancient floor. Alexander set his own hands to the work. The old temple became the base. The keep began to rise. By the full moon it stood taller than any tent camp in the region. Dark spires. Wolf-shaped walls. A seat worth bending a knee to. The envoy would return to a throne now. But a fortress that grand does not stay a secret. Along the ridges, other eyes had already marked the rising towers. Not all of them wanted to kneel.

The keep stood finished, but the wolves who built it were breaking. Alexander walked the courtyard at dawn and saw it plain. Bodies slumped against the wolf-carved walls. Backs bent. Eyes dull. They had lifted stone for a moon straight, and now they had nothing left to give. He could feel their loyalty thinning, like ice in spring. A crown meant nothing without wolves to hold it. If they scattered before the rival packs struck from the ridges, the fortress would fall in a night. Zane Greystone dropped down from the wall beside him. He was Marcus's kin, younger, quicker, wrapped in a black vest heavy with buckles. A gamma, built for scouting and fights, not hauling rock. "They're done, Alex," he said. He didn't soften it. "Two crews already talked about leaving before sundown. You can't yell them into staying." "I don't want to yell." Alexander looked past him to the temple mouth, the old carved wolf jaw over the door. Something down there had held for a hundred years. "The wolves who built this place first left more than stone." He went down into the temple alone. Cold air pressed his fur. Deep under the keep, past the worn wolf faces, he found a low stone chamber. On a cracked pedestal sat a crown. Gold, dark with age, its high points shaped like a ruler who never asked twice. The first alpha's crown. The one who had bound many packs into one, long before the bloodfeuds. A shape moved in the dark. Grayson Lowmane crouched in the corner, hooded, small, an omega who kept to shadows and watched more than he spoke. Beside him stood Shade Nightfang, a black omega with eyes like coals, arms folded. Cast-off wolves. Alexander had barely noticed them among the crews. "We found it days ago," Grayson said quietly. "We were afraid to touch it." "Afraid," Shade said, "or waiting to see if you were worth it." Alexander lifted the crown. It was heavier than it looked. He carried it up into the light. He called every wolf to the courtyard. He set the crown on his own head where all could see. "This bound the packs once," he said. "The first king wore it. I finish what he started." He raised his voice. "No wolf here serves for free. This is not my fortress. It is ours. Bend a knee, and you hold a share of it." Silence. Then Zane knelt. Marcus knelt. Grayson and Shade came up from the temple and knelt too. One by one, the exhausted wolves dropped to a knee, not from fear now, but from a claim. The loyalty held. The fortress had its garrison. But as they rose, a horn sounded from the ridges. Long, low, and answered by a second. The rival packs had seen the crown catch the light. They knew what it meant. And they were coming down.
