Chapter 1

An Du-Ku ruled the highest heaven, but he could not reach the throne meant for him. It waited on the summit of the mountain called Du-Ku, the threshold where sky must meet earth. From there the first seeds of life would spring. An had descended toward it for a long age. Now, one step from the stone, a wall of darkness stopped him. It was old, older than his own light, and it clung to the peak like wet cloth. An pressed his hand into the black. Cold swallowed his fingers. He could not see the threshold beyond. He could not see his own arm. He pushed harder, and the dark pushed back. Something breathed inside it. A shape stepped out. A bull-man, taller than An, with great curved horns and powerful legs. Gold banded his arms. He fixed An with steady eyes and did not bow. He was a guardian, set here before An ever began his descent, keeping the boundary no god had crossed. "You are the Sky-Father," the bull-man said. "The seat is yours. But the dark is not mine to move. I only watch what guards it." "Then show me," An said. The guardian struck the ground with one hoof. Two more shapes uncoiled from the darkness. A serpent-dragon slid forward on eagle talons, its horned head low, its forked tongue tasting the air. Beside it rose a fish-scaled sage, half man, half creature of deep water, his eyes calm and ancient. "The darkness is knotted by three," the sage said. "Beast of the deep. Beast of the boundary. Beast of the storm. Cut one knot, and the peak opens. But the beast you spare will hate you." An understood the choice. He could not fight all three at once and hold his light against the dark. He looked at the guardian, who kept the threshold he needed. He looked at the dragon, coiled to strike. He looked at the sage, who spoke of hidden things. An chose the boundary. He seized the bull-man's horns. Light poured down his arms and into the guardian's chest. The guardian roared and gripped An's wrists, and the two strained against each other over the black. An forced him back, step by step, toward the edge of the summit. "You break the oldest law," the guardian said through his teeth. "I make a new one," An answered. He wrenched the horns sideways and threw the guardian down. The bull-man fell from the peak into the empty air below. The knot broke. The darkness tore open like a curtain, and light spilled across bare stone. An set his foot on the threshold at last. But the dragon and the sage remained. They had watched him cast their brother down. The serpent-dragon lowered its head and hissed. The fish-sage did not blink. "Now," the sage said, "two beasts remain, and both remember."

An stood on the threshold. The dragon and the sage still watched him with hate. But a new sound rose from below the peak. Voices. The bull-man's fall had carried far. Word of his death had reached the council chamber cut into the mound. Now the Anunnaki climbed the slope to see what An had done. They filled the council room in a wide circle. At its center sat Enlil Ninmah, the one who spoke for the whole assembly. They wore gold at the brow and studied An with dark, weighing eyes. Before them lay the tools of the council: a mound crowned with wheat and barley, and beside it a bundle of herbs, flax, and grasses. These were the plants the assembly used to reckon the laws of the world. "You cast a guardian from the peak," Enlil Ninmah said. Their voice was flat. "The oldest boundary is broken. We must know. Did the Sky-Father come to rule us, or to destroy us?" Beside the grain mound stood a goddess with hair the color of ripe wheat. Ashnan. She had nurtured every stalk on that mound. "He killed what he could not pass," she said. "What will he kill next when we do not obey?" A second goddess spoke. Horns curved from her head, and her robe showed the shapes of cattle. Lahar tended the herds that fed this council. "The guardian was our watchman for ages," she said. "Now his brothers wait outside, full of hate. You brought war to our door, Sky-Father." An did not defend himself with words. He stepped to the grain mound. He set his hand on the wheat, and light ran down the stalks. New heads swelled and ripened under his palm. Then he touched the bundle of herbs. Withered stems turned green. Flowers opened. Fresh seed spilled onto the floor. The circle went still. "I did not come to break your work," An said. "I came to give it root. The threshold is where sky meets earth. From here, life springs. I threw down one guardian so that all this could grow." Ashnan knelt and lifted the spilled seed. It was heavier than any grain she had grown. Lahar watched the green herbs and said nothing more. Enlil Ninmah rose. They looked at the ripe mound, then at An. "The assembly will not call you destroyer," they said. "You may hold the threshold. But you have not won the peak. Two beasts remain outside, and they remember their brother. Rule from a seat you cannot yet keep safe, and the council watches every step." An had turned the council from fear to trust. But he saw the truth in their words. The dragon and the sage still coiled at the boundary. The throne was near, and it was not yet his to keep.

The council left the chamber, but An did not sleep. He held his light high on the peak. Below the threshold, the dragon waited. It watched for the moment his arm would tire and his glow would dim. Then it would climb and drag him from the mountain. An knew he could not stand and shine forever. He had to end the dragon, or lose the peak he had won. He looked for a weapon. He remembered a chamber cut into the mound, where the herds and grain had first been made. He climbed to the sacred purification place. Its stone walls were carved with old signs. Inside stood a great machine of metal and stone. Rings turned around its spine. Blue light crawled along its ribs and cracked like small storms. Beside it stood crystal vessels, each holding trapped lightning that pulsed behind glass. Ashnan found him there. She had followed his light up the slope. The goddess of grain stopped at the doorway, her wheat-colored hair loose. "You touch what the council never dared to wake," she said. "That storm-engine made the first seeds. It also breaks what stands too close." "The dragon means to break me first," An said. "I need its fire." Ashnan studied him. She remembered the seed he had ripened in her hand, heavier than any she had grown. She stepped inside. "Then I will help you carry it," she said. "But if you spill it, nothing on this mound survives." Together they drew two vessels from the machine. The crystal burned cold in An's grip. He carried them to the threshold's edge. Ashnan stayed back, her hands tight. An set the vessels down and let his light fall low, on purpose. He made himself look weak. The dragon rose to the bait. It surged up over the edge, jaws wide, hungry for him in the dark. An lifted both vessels and threw them into its open mouth. The crystal shattered. Trapped storms tore loose inside the beast. Lightning ripped through it from within. The dragon screamed once. Its body split in white fire and fell, burning, down the far slope into the deep. Silence held the peak. Then An raised his own light again, and it filled the whole threshold. Two guardians were gone now. Only the fish-sage remained below, somewhere in the waters under the mountain. Ashnan came to his side and looked at the empty edge. "You spent the storm well," she said. "But the machine is drained. The council will ask why." An watched the dark where the dragon had fallen. He had killed the beast that hunted him. He had also emptied the engine that fed this whole mound with life. The peak was safer, and the source of its grain was dry. Somewhere below, the last guardian would learn how his brother died, and hate him more.
