Chapter 1

Ashton Vane came to the roadside diner for coffee and left wanting to own the woman who poured it. She stood at the far booth, balancing three plates on one arm, and she did not glance at him once. That was the problem. He had decided, in the space of a breath, that she belonged to him. But she didn't know he existed. He took a stool at the counter and watched. Her name tag read Maddy. Long blonde hair, tied back but slipping loose. Light blue eyes that swept the room and skipped right over him. She refilled an old man's mug, laughed at a joke Ashton couldn't hear, and moved on. She gave every stranger more than she gave him. The neon sign buzzed outside the glass. Ashton set down his cup. He was big enough to fill a doorway, used to rooms turning when he walked in. Here, nothing turned. He hated it, and he wanted her more for it. He needed her to look. One clean moment where she saw him and he saw her see him. Everything he wanted started there. So he made a plan. He waited until her section cleared. Then he lifted his empty mug and let it slip from his fingers. It hit the tile and shattered. Maddy turned. She crossed to him fast, already reaching for the shards. "Don't move," she said. "You'll cut yourself." "I've got it." Ashton crouched with her. Their hands landed on the same broken piece. She looked up. For one second her eyes met his and held. Up close they were paler than he'd guessed, and steady. She didn't blush. She didn't pull back. "You did that on purpose," she said. Not a question. Ashton didn't lie. "I wanted you to look at me." She stood, ceramic in her palm, and studied him the way a person studies a bill they aren't sure they'll pay. Then something in her face shifted. Curiosity, maybe. Or a dare. "Well." A small smile. "Now I have." She carried the broken mug to the counter and came back with a fresh one, steam rising. She set it in front of him. On the saucer she'd tucked a folded napkin. Ashton opened it under the table. A phone number. Below it, three words in quick pen: *Try harder next time.* He looked up. Maddy was already three tables away, taking an order, not watching him at all. But she'd left the door open on purpose. Ashton folded the napkin into his shirt pocket and pressed his hand flat over it. She knew he existed now. She'd handed him the thread herself. The trouble was the challenge in those three words. Maddy thought she was testing him. She had no idea he never stopped once he'd started. He drank his coffee and began to plan how he would take everything she'd just offered, and more.
