Chapter 1

Astara knelt in the dirt behind her cottage and struck a single ember to life. The spark hissed, bright and hungry. She smothered it fast. One flicker over the fence would bring the wardens before dawn. But she could not stop the work. Binding ember to leyline was the only thing that mattered now, even if every neighbor on the lane believed it could not, or should not, be done. She needed walls. Walls that did not look like walls. She walked to the bare patch of ground past her garden and unrolled a sketch weighted by a strange charm of woven red threads, a heart-shaped knot she kept close whenever she returned to first principles. The threads hummed against her palm. They reminded her where ember ended and leyline began. She worked through the night. Stone by stone, she raised a tall prism of pale metal, its faces catching light that wasn't there. Around its base she set five dark, cracked pillars, each veined with slow orange fire. The pillars marked the edge of ember's reach. The prism bent the air above, folding sight and sound inward. At the first gray hour, she tested it. She struck a flame inside the ring. It flared high, hot, alive. She held her breath and watched the fence line. No shout. No lantern. No warden boots on the path. The prism drank the light. The pillars swallowed the heat. From outside, her yard looked empty and cold. Astara let the flame burn a full minute before she pinched it out. She had her workshop now. But as she stared at the dark pillars, she saw the real problem clearly for the first time. Ember stopped where they stood. The leyline waited beyond. And she still had no bridge between them.

Chapter 2

By morning, Astara stood inside her hidden ring and faced the next wall. Ember would not come to her by hand. She had tried twice already. Twice her palms had blistered before the spark even settled. The workshop was ready. She was not. She set the obsidian crown on a low stone block at the center of the ring. Its red veins drank the air. Inside its curved spines, raw ember could rest without eating through stone. She tested it dry first, tapping the metal with a rod. The crown held its shape. The veins pulsed once, slow and patient, like a held breath. Around the cradle she fitted the portable lab she had dragged in piece by piece. Tubes, clamps, a narrow arm that could lift and tilt without her fingers near the heat. She bolted the arm to the frame and tested its swing. It moved smooth. She would never touch the ember again. The machine would. She opened her notebook, the one with shifting pages that caught her handwriting like smoke. She read her last entry aloud. Burn through grip in four seconds. Skin splits at the knuckle. She turned the page and waited, pen ready. Then she struck the ember and dropped it into the crown. The spark fell, caught, and bloomed. The obsidian held. The arm swung in and cupped the flame without flinching. Astara watched her own hands. They were steady. They were whole. She wrote one clean line on the fresh page. Ember contained. Now the real problem begins.
