Chapter 1

Auros Veskerel had ruined four smiles by noon, and every one of them ran. The gold-skinned collector stood in the market, bone wings folded tight, and watched the fifth mortal back away. Auros had leaned close, whispered a joke twisted just enough to sour, and waited for the grin to curdle into the black-eyed shape they wore themselves. Instead the woman felt the wrongness. She dropped her basket and fled. Auros wanted every mouth in this town bent into their hollow grin. But you cannot twist a smile you do not understand. That was the problem. Auros knew death, not delight. They pushed too hard, too fast, and mortals smelled the trap. Each failure left one more person warned, one more door shut. The town was learning to look away from the tall shape at the edge of the square. So Auros stopped hunting. They needed to learn what made these people happy before they could break it. At the far side of the square stood a brooding tower of dark stone, half-swallowed by shade. No one looked at it. No one went near it. Auros folded their wings and slipped inside. Through a narrow gap in the stone, they could see the whole market and stay unseen. For two days Auros watched. They did not lean close. They did not whisper. They only looked. And the smiles came apart in front of them, plain as bones. A baker smiled when a child paid with a bent coin and he waved it away. Two old men smiled over the same argument they had every morning. A girl smiled at a strange flower a boy had grown, a red rose with thorns curved like small claws. It was ugly and lovely at once, and she pressed it to her chest. Auros saw it now. The smiles were not about the joke. They were about being seen. Being given something. Being safe with someone. Every grin grew from a small gift between two people. Auros drew back into the dark and understood. They had been trying to twist joy from the outside. But joy was a door, and every door had a handle. To break a smile, first you gave the gift. First you made them feel safe. Then you turned the handle the wrong way. That night Auros left the tower with a plan. They walked to the market stall where the girl kept her strange rose in a jar of water. They set a coin beside it, more than it was worth, and smiled. Not the black-eyed grin. A soft one, borrowed from the baker. The girl looked up. She smiled back. She did not run. For the first time, a mortal met Auros and felt safe. And that was exactly the door Auros needed. Now they knew how to open it, and how to break whatever they found on the other side.

Chapter 2

The girl at the flower stall had smiled at Auros. That smile taught them one hard lesson. To break more mortals, they needed to stand among them without sending them running. But gold skin and bone wings emptied every street they entered. So Auros returned to the dark tower with a new problem. They needed a disguise. Auros searched the tower's forgotten rooms. In a cracked chest they found a charm on a chain. The stone glowed soft pink, ringed with strange marks. When Auros closed their fist around it, the glow spread up their arm. Gold skin turned pale. Bone wings folded flat and vanished under plain cloth. Auros looked at their hands and saw a stranger's hands. Human ones. They walked into the town wearing the charm. No one fled. A woman passed close and only nodded. Auros nodded back and felt the trap tighten in their chest. Now they could stand at any door and knock. They chose a stone house with a red roof and worn steps. Auros knocked. The door opened, and a small brown creature bolted out, half dog and half rabbit, ears flopping. Behind it stood a girl in a cream sweater. She grabbed the creature before it reached the road. "He does that," the girl said. She smiled up at Auros. "Are you new here?" This was Louanna. Auros could see the house behind her, warm and full. A family that stayed close. Exactly the kind of smile worth breaking. Auros crouched and let the creature sniff their hand. "I am new," they said, in the borrowed soft voice. "Your pet likes strangers." Louanna laughed. She invited Auros to sit on the steps. They talked. Auros gave her small kindnesses, one after another, the way the baker had. Louanna trusted easily. The door to her smile stood open. Auros only had to wait for the right moment to turn the handle wrong. Then a shadow fell over the steps. An old man in a purple cloak stopped on the path. A gold crown sat on his white hair. He held a staff topped with a glowing stone. His eyes were tired, the eyes of a man who had not slept in months. "You," the king said. His voice was flat and short. He did not smile. "Your charm is bright. Too bright for a townsman." Auros felt the pink glow flicker against their skin. Louanna looked between them, confused. "I have seen wrongness lately," Aldric Whitebane said. "Water that climbs up walls. Dogs that howl at nothing." He pointed the staff at Auros. "You carry the same wrongness. I name it plainly." He did not run. That was the problem. The disguise had won Auros a place among the townsfolk. But it had also brought them under the eye of a king who could see through it.
