Chapter 1

Azrael Starfall had orders to guard the gate between heaven and earth, and instead he leaned against a fence post, watching mortals and dreaming of falling in love with one. His order forbade it. An angel who loved a mortal lost his wings. He knew the cost, and he still wanted it. The trouble was simpler than any law. He didn't know where, in all the wide mortal world, he might find the one worth losing everything for. He had folded his fluffy white wings tight and dropped into a valley of green hills. Somewhere below stood an old stone castle, its turrets wrapped in ivy, gargoyles crouched along its edges. He had no reason to search there over anywhere else. That was the whole problem. The mortal world was enormous. His heart was one small thing, and he had no map to it. Then a small creature hopped from the tall grass and stopped at his boot. It was a baby rabbit with soft spotted fur. When the morning light touched it, its coat shimmered faint rainbow. The rabbit stared up at him with wide brown eyes, then turned and hopped three steps. It stopped. It looked back, as if waiting. Azrael had heard the old stories. Some creatures knew the way toward anything you truly sought. He crouched low. "You know where I should go?" he asked. The rabbit twitched its nose and hopped on. He followed. The rabbit led him away from the castle, along a stream, through a meadow thick with wildflowers. His roguish smile faded into something quieter. Each step felt less like a search and more like an answer. The rabbit never rushed. It waited whenever he fell behind. The meadow opened. A cottage stood wrapped in blossoms, its walls bright with untamed flowers. And there, at dawn, a young woman knelt alone in the garden. She had a long brown braid down her back and a crown of small flowers in her hair. Her pastel dress was smudged with dirt at the knees. She was cutting delicate lilies, their bells colored like soft candy. She heard him and turned fast. Fear crossed her face, then something braver. "You have wings," she said. "I should be afraid of you. I'm not, and I don't know why. I always say exactly what I think. I can't help it." She pressed her lips shut, as if that alone had cost her. Azrael's breath caught. The rabbit sat between them and did not move. He had asked for a direction, and it had brought him to her. The search was over. He knew the face now. But a girl with dirt on her dress and a truth she could not stop speaking was hiding here at dawn, far from any home. People hid for a reason. And Azrael's greatest fear had just come true. He had found her, and he already could not walk away.

The rabbit still sat between them. Azrael did not move, afraid the girl would run. She wiped dirt from her hands and watched his wings. "I don't even know your name," he said. "Verity," she answered at once. Then her mouth twisted, as if the word had escaped a cage. "I hate that I told you. I hate that I can't stop. I'm running from a wedding I never agreed to. The men who chase me are close. There. I've said it all." She pressed a hand to her lips. Azrael crouched to her level. "You always speak the truth," he said. "Even when it costs you." "I can't lie," Verity said. "Not once in my life. It's a curse." Tears sat in her eyes. "If they find me here, I'll be gone by nightfall. Married off. You'll never see me again." The rabbit's ears snapped up. Down the meadow, voices called. Boots crushed the tall grass. Azrael turned and saw them: four men in leather, blades at their hips, spreading through the flowers. He made his choice before he weighed the cost. "Take my hand." "Why should I trust you?" Verity asked. "I trust you. I don't know why. That frightens me most." He pulled her close and opened his wings. The men shouted and broke into a run. Azrael beat the air once, twice, and lifted them both off the ground. Verity gasped and clung to his neck. Below, the pursuers grabbed at empty air. He carried her up through cloud, higher than any mortal could climb. The meadow shrank to a green smudge. Ahead rose a temple of pale stone, its arches strung with rainbows, its spires wrapped in mist. No mortal hunter would ever reach it. He set her down on the marble steps. Verity stared at the glowing walls. Her legs shook. "They can't follow here," she said. "I'm safe. I'm also terrified. Both are true." Azrael reached into his coat and drew out a small gold locket. He pressed it into her palm. Inside it was hollow, empty, waiting. "This holds one secret," he said. "You can't lie, so you can't pretend a false one. Put your truest fear inside and close it. No one opens it but you." She understood. A gift a truth-teller could take without lying. Her fingers curled around the gold. "You saved me," she said. "And now I owe you my honesty forever. I don't mind that. I've never not minded anything before." Her pursuers were miles below, chasing nothing. Verity would not vanish tonight. But Azrael had carried a mortal into a holy place, and above them, past the rainbows, his own kind watched the gate he had abandoned. He had won her a night of safety. He had also shown heaven exactly where he had gone.

The rabbit followed them to the sanctuary. Its rainbow fur caught the morning light as it tugged the hem of Azrael's cloak. Verity waited for him in a grotto below the temple, a place of pale stone and hanging willow fronds where no mortal ever came. Azrael went to meet her. But the rabbit would not let go. It pulled harder, teeth catching the fabric. Azrael crouched and pushed it off. "Enough. She's waiting." The rabbit sat back and stared. It had led him across the countryside to Verity's garden. It knew things he did not. He almost stopped to listen. Then he saw her in the grotto and forgot the creature entirely. Verity sat on the stone lip of a pool. She turned a small arrangement of pastel bells in her hands, lilies he had left for her. Her braid hung to the floor. When she looked up, she did not smile. "You keep coming back," she said. "I want you to. I also want you to stop." Her hands tightened on the flowers. "Because I saw what this costs you." "It costs me nothing," he said. "You can't say that to me. I always know a lie." She stood. "Your wings. I dreamed they took them. I woke and my chest hurt and I couldn't breathe. That's my fear. It isn't the wedding anymore. It's your wings." Azrael reached into his coat. He drew out a ring set with a fragment of fallen star, a piece of the sky he had carried down. He held it between them. "I already chose. I brought you here knowing they'd see. My own kind watched me carry you past the gate. There's no undoing it." Verity's face went white. "Then it's already happening." Behind him, the rabbit shrieked, a sound he had never heard it make. Azrael turned. The willow fronds had gone still. No wind moved them. A cold weight pressed on his shoulders, the same weight he had felt every day at the gate above. They had found the sanctuary. They had followed his trail to this exact stone. He felt it start between his shoulder blades. A pull, slow and deep, like hands closing around each wing. He gasped. The rabbit bolted into the dark, gone. "Azrael!" Verity dropped the flowers and gripped his arms. "Tell me it's not real. You can't. You can't tell me, can you." He could not. He pressed the ring into her palm and closed her fingers over it. The pull deepened. One white feather drifted down between them and settled on the wet stone. Then another. "I chose you," he said. "I'd choose you with no wings at all." The grotto filled with cold light. Verity screamed his name. Above them, unseen, his own kind began to take back what they had given.
