Chapter 1

Azzie stood on the empty floor of her shop and practiced her smile. She was a water serpent with teal scales, the second monster the sanctuary ever calmed. Now she wore a blonde wig and a pink top, and she wanted one thing: a beauty brand that made monsters feel glamorous. The problem was the shelves. They held wigs and nail bottles, but nothing that was hers. Nothing with her name on it. Her phone leaned against a mirror, filming. "So today I'm launching my line," she told the empty air. Then she stopped. She had no line. She had a full store and nothing to sell that meant anything. She turned the phone off. Terra shoved the door open. She was the first monster ever calmed, once a kaiju who flattened cities, now built like a wall in a leather jacket. She looked at Azzie's shelves and grunted. "Empty talk. No product." "I know," Azzie said. "I don't have a signature thing. Nobody takes a brand with no product." Terra picked up a wig, turned it, set it down. "You copy soft-monster looks. Human looks." She tapped one clawed finger on the counter. "You're a water serpent. You had scales before the wig. Sell the scales." Azzie stiffened. "Monsters hate their scales. That's why they come here." "Then you're the same as every shop," Terra said. Blunt. Final. The door opened again. Grey slipped in, the gargoyle, third to be freed from stone, soft under skin that looked like rock. She had been watching the street from a roof. "Okay so I saw your light on," she said. "You look upset. What's wrong?" "I have no product," Azzie said. "I have a shop full of pretend." Grey ran a finger down Azzie's arm, over the teal scales the wig and top could not cover. "These are pretty," she said simply. "Like water. I never had anything shiny. I'm just stone." Azzie looked at her own arm. She had spent months hiding what she was under blonde hair. Every monster in the city did the same. That was the whole business. And it was a lie. She reached under the counter and pulled out a small jar of clear gloss meant for lips. Then she thought harder. She dabbed it on a patch of her scales. They caught the light and shone like wet glass. "A scale gloss," she said. "Not to hide what you are. To make it glow." Grey held out her stone arm. Azzie brushed the gloss across it. The grey caught a soft sheen. Grey stared, then smiled wide. "Okay. I'd buy that." Terra crossed her arms. "That's a product." Azzie turned her phone back on. This time her smile was real. She had her signature line, and it broke every rule of her own shop. Now she had to make monsters believe a lie was the mask, and their real skin was the beauty.

Chapter 2

Azzie lined up her scale gloss on the counter. Twelve bottles. She had spent all night mixing them, one at a time, over a hot plate. Her arms ached. Her display stood empty behind her, an ornate showcase built for fifty bottles, maybe more. Twelve looked like a joke. She could not stock a shelf this way. She could not build a brand this way. Grey pressed the bell for customers she did not have. "You need help," she said. "You need someone who makes things in big batches." Azzie knew one person who did. She grabbed her keys. Vanessa Bancroft ran the lab that kept every calmed monster calm. She was the scientist who turned raw monster tissue into medicine, gallons of it, day after day. Azzie found her at a steel table, filling vials with steady hands. Platinum hair spilled over her lab coat. She did not look up. "I make one bottle at a time," Azzie said. "I need to make hundreds." Vanessa set down her pipette. "Show me your gloss." Azzie handed one over. Vanessa unscrewed it, rubbed a drop between two fingers, held it to the light. "Simple base. Cheap to scale." She pointed to a machine in the corner, a wide steel drum with a mixing arm. "That runs a batch in an hour. Two hundred bottles." Azzie's heart jumped. "You'd let me use it?" "After hours," Vanessa said. "Not during. My work comes first." She said it flat, no room to push. "The supply I run keeps monsters from falling apart. Your gloss does not." Azzie flinched, then nodded. "After hours. Deal." They ran the first batch that night. The drum hummed. Gloss poured into bottle after bottle, a river of it, clear and shining. Azzie filled a crate, then another. By dawn she had two hundred bottles, then four hundred. She stacked them until her arms shook with joy instead of ache. But a woman had been watching from the doorway. She wore a purple dress and hoop earrings, arms crossed, one eyebrow up. Azzie did not know her. "Well," the woman said. "Somebody's busy." "Who are you?" "Nancy. I keep the records here, honey. Every batch this lab makes. Every drop of tissue that goes in." She stepped closer to the crates. "Funny thing. I count what Vanessa uses. And tonight the numbers don't match." Azzie went cold. "We only used the mixer. Not her supply." "You used her base," Nancy said. "Her stock. Her power. Her time." She smiled, slow. "I'm not saying I'll tell anybody. I'm saying I know. That's a different thing." She let the words hang, then turned and walked out. Azzie looked at her four hundred bottles. She had solved it. She could stock every shelf now. But her whole brand ran through a lab she did not control, watched by a woman who wrote everything down and forgot nothing. The shelf was full. The ground under it was not hers.

Four hundred bottles filled Azzie's shop from floor to ceiling. Her ornate display glowed, every shelf packed with colored gloss. She flicked the sign to OPEN and waited. An hour passed. No one came. The problem was not stock now. No monster knew her gloss existed. A full shelf sold nothing without eyes on it. Grey sat on the counter, watching the empty door. "Okay so," she said, "you made the stuff. But nobody knows it's here." She shrugged. "Feels lonely in here. Like a party with no guests." Azzie stared at the shining bottles. "I need people to see it. On someone. In real life." An idea sharpened. "Not just anyone. Someone monsters already look at." She knew who. She grabbed a crate and drove to the gym. Terra was the first monster ever rehabilitated. Every Monstropian knew her name. Right now she was slamming a barbell to the floor hard enough to crack tile. Her horn dripped sweat. She caught her own grunt before it turned into a roar, the way she always did. "No," Terra said, before Azzie opened her mouth. "You don't know what I want." "You want me to wear your paint." Terra wiped her plates with a towel. "I don't do glam." Azzie set the crate down. "You told me to stop hiding my scales. Remember? You started this." She held up a teal bottle. "This makes scales look better, not fake. Your scales. On camera. Monsters watch you already." Terra picked up the bottle. She rubbed a drop onto one back plate. The stone-gray scale caught the light and shone deep blue. She turned her arm. The color moved like water. "Huh," Terra said. Grey had followed and stood in the doorway. "Whoa," she said. "Okay, that's actually kind of amazing." Azzie's hands shook. "Let me film you. One clip. You lift, your scales shine, I post it." Terra flexed. The plates rippled with color. "Fine. One clip. No wig on me. No skirt." "Deal." Azzie filmed Terra pressing a weight overhead. The gloss threw blue light across the room. Grey watched from behind the phone, grinning. Azzie posted it that night with the bottle name across the screen. By morning the clip had spread through every Monstropian feed. Comments piled up. Monsters wanted the shine on their own scales, their own hides. The shop door opened before Azzie even flipped the sign. A line formed outside her Glam Grotto. Gargoyles, serpents, and horned things pushed in, pointing at the glowing display. Azzie sold forty bottles in an hour. Then eighty. The stock she thought would never move flew off the shelf. But the crowd cleared her shelves fast. By noon her four hundred bottles were nearly gone. Demand was real now, and huge. To make more, she needed the lab again. The lab Nancy watched. The lab where every batch was counted, and where a woman held her secret and waited.
