Chapter 1

Benny Larkin had rung the brass bell at dawn for forty years, and this morning her hands shook on the rope. Not from cold. From the thought that had kept her awake all night: she was old, and when she died, the bell would go silent. The town woke to that sound. The bakers, the shepherds, the schoolteacher. Someone young had to learn the ritual. But no one in town would rise before the sun. She had asked them all. The baker's son laughed in her face. The shepherd girls said dawn belonged to no one. A boy told her he slept until noon and planned to keep it that way. Benny had nothing left to offer them but the cold and the quiet and a rope that burned your palms in January. So she went to the one person who kept a stranger schedule than her own. Hazel Emmett was already at her desk when Benny pushed open the library door. The librarian looked up over reading glasses on a beaded chain, her fingers blue with chalk dust. She had just finished writing the day's book on the board by the door. She did that every single day, Benny knew, the way Benny rang the bell. "You look like a woman who needs a chair," Hazel said. Benny sat. She told Hazel everything. The bell. The ritual. The empty years ahead. "No young person will wake for it," she finished. "I've begged them all." Hazel took off her glasses and let them hang. "You're asking the wrong question. You don't need someone who loves dawn. You need someone who already keeps a thing alive out of stubbornness." She tapped the chalkboard. "Like me." Benny stared at her. "You'd ring it?" "Not me. My knees are worse than yours." Hazel pulled a card from a drawer and slid it across the desk. "But I match people to the thing they're built for. Give me a week. I'll find you someone who rises early and has nothing to rise for yet." For the first time in days, Benny breathed easy. She had spent the whole time hunting the willing. Hazel was offering to hunt the lonely instead. "One condition," Hazel said. She picked up her chalk and wrote a second line on the board. "You teach them to love it. I can deliver a body at dawn. I can't make it stay." Benny stood and shook the inky hand. The deal was done. She walked home lighter than she had in weeks. Then, at her door, a thought stopped her cold. Hazel would bring someone early. But Benny had never once taught another soul. She knew the rope, the timing, the swing. She did not know how to put any of it into words. The silence she feared was gone. A harder problem had taken its place.
