Chapter 1

Brax wanted the whole street to love him, and he knew exactly why that mattered. A man everybody trusts never gets questioned. A man nobody knows gets watched. So when the community center's roof caved in during the spring rains, Brax saw his chance. He showed up with his tool belt rattling and his biggest laugh, ready to fix the one thing every family on the block cared about. The problem was that nobody there knew his name. He had lived six months behind six locked doors and two drawn curtains. He waved at folks. He never stopped to talk. Now a dozen neighbors crowded the sagging porch, arms folded, eyeing the stranger with the wrench. "You live here?" one woman asked. She held a cracked stone gnome under her arm, the kind people set in gardens. "Which house?" "The gray one," Brax said. He smiled wide. "Been meaning to come say hello." No one smiled back. They did not trust him with their center. They did not trust him with a hammer. So Brax went to work in front of all of them. He climbed the ladder. He hauled out rotted beams and set new ones. He patched the roof where the rain had chewed through. He fixed the broken front door that had stuck for years. By late afternoon, he had the sagging porch standing straight again. Then he found the real problem. Inside a back storage room, something had torn the wall open. The gap led under the building, into the dark. Claw marks scored the concrete. Deep ones. Brax knelt and touched a strand of coarse brown fur caught on the jagged edge. Beneath the fur lay a sliver of bright metal, smooth and machined, like part of a joint. He knew that scrap. He knew what wore both fur and steel. His stomach dropped. Brax patched the hole fast, before anyone looked over his shoulder. He nailed a board across it and painted the board the same faded color as the wall. He said nothing. When he climbed down for the last time, the crowd had changed. The woman with the gnome was smiling now. A man clapped him on the back. A boy ran a hand along the fixed door, laughing when it swung clean. "We should've met you months ago," the woman said. "You need anything, Brax, you knock. Any of our doors." They knew his name now. They trusted him. He had what he came for. But he walked home slower than he'd come. The thing that clawed through that wall was his. It had gotten out of his basement, under the street, into the place the whole neighborhood used. And he had just sealed its exit on the wrong side.
