Chapter 1

Caelan Nightshade wanted the prophecy dead. He stood in his war room and read the seer's words again, though he knew them by heart: a human woman would be his mate, and only she could crown him king. He hated every letter. A fae prince bound to a human. He would find a way to break the prophecy or he would not rule at all. Then his spymaster brought worse news. Riders from the Celios Kingdom had crossed the border. They rode fast, and they rode with hunting dogs. They were not looking for war. They were looking for a woman. Caelan's hands went cold. If the prophecy was true, the human mate lived somewhere he had never found. Now his enemy meant to find her first. If she died, he would never be crowned. His kingdom would sit without a king, ripe for taking. He did not wait for morning. He rode alone to the frozen pass where the Celios riders had camped. Snow bit his face. He kept his blade sheathed and his magic close, a hum of shadow under his skin. A man waited by the dying fire as if he had expected him. White hair, white coat trimmed in pale fur, eyes like ice with a light behind them. Aldric Celios. Caelan's rival since they were boys, and the one man who smiled while he cut you. "You came yourself," Aldric said. He warmed his gloved hands and did not rise. "I thought you might send soldiers. But no. This matters too much for you to trust anyone else." "Call off your hunt," Caelan said. "Why would I?" Aldric tilted his head. "Your little prophecy is a gift to me. All I have to do is keep one human woman from ever finding you. No mate, no crown. Your throne stays empty, and empty thrones are easy to fill." Caelan understood then. Aldric did not want to kill him. He wanted him unmade, left a prince who could never become king. "You've hunted for weeks," Caelan said. "You still don't have her." Aldric's smile thinned. That crack told Caelan everything. He struck. Shadow poured from his hands and swallowed the fire. The dogs screamed and scattered. Aldric shouted an order, but his men could not see. Caelan seized the map spread by the fire, the one marked with red where the hunters had searched. He tore it free and ran for his horse. Aldric's voice chased him through the dark. "You need her more than I do, Caelan! You'll bring her to me yourself!" Caelan rode hard until the snow thinned. Then he opened the stolen map. Every searched village was crossed out. Only one place had no mark at all. One village they had not yet reached. He had stopped Aldric's hunt for now. But he saw the trap plain. The map showed him where his mate must be. The woman he wanted gone was the only woman who could save his crown, and now he was the one who had to find her first.

Chapter 3

Caelan walked into the village at full morning. He had come to end the prophecy, not to admire it. Somewhere in these plain streets lived the woman named as his mate. He meant to find her, look at her once, and decide how to cut the bond for good. That was the plan he carried down from the ridge. But the village was not what he expected. Children ran between the houses. A baker handed bread across a low counter. No guards. No walls. These people could not stop a single fae soldier, let alone Aldric's men. His mate lived here with nothing between her and death but distance. The thought sat wrong in his chest, and he did not know why. He found the book shoppe by its open door. Inside, a thin woman with long brown hair stood on a stool, sliding a volume onto a high shelf. She did not turn when he entered. "We open at the top of the hour," she said. "You can wait or you can come back." "I'm looking for someone," Caelan said. She stepped down and faced him. Her dark eyes moved over his fine clothes, his pointed ears, and did not widen. Most humans flinched at his kind. She only crossed her arms. "You're fae," she said. "We don't get many. What do you want?" He meant to lie. Instead the words came plain. "There's a prophecy. It names a human woman as my mate. I came to break it." She laughed, short and dry. "I sell prophecy books. I don't believe a word of them." She set a stack of pages straight. "A stranger's fate isn't a rope around your neck. You choose who you are. Nobody chooses it for you." Caelan stood still. He had spent months trying to sever a fate he hated. Every court watched him for it. He had never once heard someone call it a choice. He looked at her hands, her worn corset, the small shop she clearly owned and ran alone. Kind, but sharp enough to put a fae prince in his place. "What's your name?" he asked. "Kensie," she said. "Kensie Greenbriar. And yours?" He knew then. The pull was faint but real, a warmth under his ribs he had spent his whole life refusing to feel. This was her. The target. The liability. The one his enemies would use to end him. He had come to kill his own path to the crown by breaking her from his fate. But standing in her shop, watching her file away books she didn't believe in, he could not say the words that would begin it. "Caelan," he said. "Nightshade." He did not tell her the rest. He turned and left before she could see his face change. His certainty was gone. And Aldric was still coming, closer with every hour Caelan spent unsure of what he wanted.

Caelan came back to the bookshop at dusk. He had spent the day on the ridge, testing every method he knew to sever the bond. None worked. The pull under his ribs stayed. He had no cure, and Aldric was close. So he chose the only thing left. He would take her somewhere Aldric could not reach. Kensie was locking the door when he stepped from the shadows. She did not jump. She only turned the key and faced him. "You left this morning without paying for the story you told," she said. "Now you're back. Say it plain." "You're in danger," Caelan said. "The prophecy is real. A rival prince is hunting the woman named as my mate. That woman is you." She crossed her arms. "I told you. I don't believe in fate. Or mates. And I certainly don’t believe I am your mate." "He does. He'll kill you to keep me from the throne. This village has no walls and no guards. You can't fight off fae here. And you are my mate like it or not, don’t you feel that warm pull in your chest?" Her jaw set. She looked down the empty street, at the dark windows, the low fences. He watched the truth land on her face. She was smart enough to count the odds. "So what," she said. "You take me. To where." "My home. Nightshade Castle. It has walls he can't break." "And a fae prince who kidnaps a woman he just met." "I'm not asking to court you," Caelan said. "I'm asking to keep you alive until I find a way to end this." Kensie studied him a long moment. "You still want to break the bond." "Yes." "Honest, at least." She pulled the key from the lock. "I have a shop. A life. You want me to leave it because of a rope you can't see." "The rope isn't the danger. He is." She was quiet. Then she looked at the shop she owned, the one she ran alone, and something in her shoulders gave. "One condition," she said. "When it's over, you send me home. No fate. No bond. I go back to my books." "Agreed." They rode through the night. Caelan kept to the valley shadows, away from any road Aldric's scouts might watch. By first light the castle rose ahead of them, dark towers and colored windows against a gray sky. The gates opened. They closed behind her. Kensie stood in the great hall and looked up at the high stone. She did not look afraid. She looked like a woman taking measure of a cage. "It's safe here," Caelan said. "For me," she said. "What about you." He had no answer. He had pulled the one person his enemies wanted straight into his own walls. If Aldric learned where she was, the castle became a map to her, and a trap for them both. Caelan had bought her safety by binding her fate to his roof. The bond he came to cut was now closer than ever.
