Chapter 1

Caleb Summer crouched behind a dumpster with his sister pressed against his chest. Two blocks away, men in gray coats searched doorways with flashlights. They worked for the company that had kept Caleb and Lily in a lab their whole lives. That morning the siblings had run. Now the company wanted them back. "They're close," Lily whispered. Her eyes caught the streetlight, red and purple and blue swirling like a small galaxy. Those eyes were why the company would never stop looking. "Caleb, where do we go?" He had no answer. They had nowhere to hide. Every open street left them exposed, and the men were spreading out fast. A metal crow dropped onto the dumpster lid. Its feathers shone black, and its eyes glowed ruby red. Caleb flinched. The bird tilted its head, hopped once, then flew low toward a dark building. It stopped, waited, and watched them. "It wants us to follow," Lily said. Caleb didn't trust it. But the flashlights were turning their way. He grabbed Lily's hand and ran after the crow. The bird led them to an abandoned library. Boards covered the windows. The door hung loose on one hinge. Inside, tall shelves leaned in the dark, thick with dust. The crow flew up a staircase to the top floor. There, behind a false wall of books, Caleb found a hidden apartment. Clean. Dry. Safe. He pulled Lily inside and bolted the wall shut. For the first time all day, he breathed. But safe wasn't enough. He needed help from someone the company didn't control. He took out an old phone and dialed a number he had kept for years. A cold voice answered. "Who is this?" "It's Caleb." Silence. Then the voice softened just slightly. "Caleb. You're alive." Zyane Sterling had been their friend since childhood. His parents once worked for the company. They had tried to save Caleb and Lily, and the company threw them out for it. Zyane was a doctor now, calm and careful, the only person left who owed the company nothing. "I need you," Caleb said. "Lily's with me. We got out. They're hunting us." "Where are you?" Caleb described the library and the hidden loft. He heard Zyane moving, grabbing keys, already deciding. "Don't open that wall for anyone but me," Zyane said. "I'll be there before dawn. Keep her inside." "You're sure? This puts you in danger." "I know exactly what it does." A pause. "She's worth it. Stay put." The line went dead. Caleb lowered the phone. Across the small room, Lily had already fallen asleep against the wall, trusting him completely. They had a roof now. They had help coming. But the metal crow perched on the windowsill, watching the street with its red eyes. Someone had built that bird. Someone had sent it. And it had known exactly where to lead them.

Chapter 2

By morning the loft felt smaller. Caleb opened the cabinets one by one. Each stood empty. No food. No water past the single bottle they'd shared. Lily sat against the wall, pale, her stomach growling loud in the quiet. Outside, gray coats still swept the street below. Zyane wouldn't reach them for hours. Caleb had a sister to feed and nowhere safe to go. "I can wait," Lily said. She didn't look at him. "I've gone longer." That was the problem. He knew exactly how long the company had made them go. He wasn't letting that happen again. He pulled his hood up and reached for the hidden wall. "Caleb." Her voice stopped him. "They'll see your eyes." She was right. His eyes marked him the same as hers did. He pulled the hood lower and went anyway. The shelves below held old books and dust. Then he saw it on a low table, half buried. A metal model of rings and spinning weights, the kind that showed how planets moved. An idea came fast. The company tracked anything strange. He could give them something strange to chase. He carried the model to a broken window at the far end of the library. He set its rings turning, then wedged it so the weights clicked and rattled against the glass. The noise carried into the street. Flashlights swung toward it. He heard boots run that way. Away from the loft. Away from Lily. Caleb slipped out the loose front door while the coats gathered at the noise. A corner shop stood dark two buildings down. He broke a low pane, climbed through, and grabbed what he could. Bread. Water. Cans. He stuffed them into a bag and ran back the way he'd come. He made it to the loft and bolted the wall. His hands shook. Lily was already tearing into the bread before he set the bag down. "You left," she said between bites. Not angry. Scared for him. "I came back." Then three knocks came at the hidden wall. Slow. Even. Caleb froze. Zyane wasn't due till dawn, and dawn hadn't come. "Caleb." The voice through the wall was flat and sure. "It's me. Open it." He knew that voice from childhood. He slid the wall back. Zyane Sterling stood there, black hair wet, forest-green eyes moving over the room, then over Lily, then over the shaking in Caleb's hands. "You went outside," Zyane said. Not a question. "We had nothing." Zyane set down a heavy medical bag. "They found the shop you hit. I passed two of them on my way in." He looked at Caleb, level and cold. "They're not searching the streets anymore. They're searching this block." The food sat between them. Caleb had fed her. He had also drawn the company to their door.

The food still sat between them when Zyane crossed to the window. He parted the curtain an inch and looked down at the street. "They're two doors away," he said. His voice stayed level, the way it always did when things were worst. "Front and back. We have minutes." Caleb pulled Lily up by the hand. "The car," Zyane said. "Mine. Parked behind the loading door. If we move now, through the back, we can reach it." He grabbed the medical bag. "But they'll see three people leave. Not two." Caleb understood before Zyane finished. "No," he said. "They're looking for a man and a girl with strange eyes." Zyane met his stare, cold and sure. "If a man walks out the front and talks to them, they stop watching the back." He had chosen medicine at seventeen to keep Caleb safe. He was choosing this the same way. "I'll give you the back door. Take her and go." "Zyane." Caleb's throat hurt. "They'll know your face." "They don't have my face yet." Zyane pressed the car key into Caleb's palm. "Gray lot. Blue sedan. Don't stop for me." Lily looked between them. "Caleb," she said. Just his name. A line she wouldn't cross, asking him to decide. He decided. He hated it. He pulled his sister toward the hidden wall and the stairs below. Zyane went to the front. He opened the loose door and stepped into the street like a man who belonged there. "Evening," Caleb heard him say, flat and bored. "You're looking for someone? I live above the shop on the corner." The gray coats turned toward him. Flashlights swung. Boots gathered at the front. Caleb pulled Lily down the dark shelves. Dust. The smell of old paper. He found the loading door at the back, cracked it, and listened. Empty. The coats had moved to Zyane's voice. He shoved Lily out ahead of him. The lot held three cars. The blue sedan sat against the far wall. They ran low. Caleb's hands shook as he jammed the key in the lock. It turned. He pushed Lily across the seat and climbed in after. He did not start the engine yet. Through the gap between buildings he saw the street. Zyane stood in the ring of flashlights, talking slow, buying seconds. Then a coat grabbed his arm. Another checked something against a paper. Their voices changed. Someone shouted. "Caleb." Lily's hand closed on his sleeve. "He said don't stop." Caleb turned the key. The engine caught. He pulled the car out and away, tires loud on the wet lot, Zyane's voice swallowed behind them. Lily did not cry. She stared back at the loft going small in the mirror. "He's not coming," she said. "No." Caleb's hands locked on the wheel. They were out. They were free of the block. And they had left the one person who came for them in the hands of the gray coats.
