Chapter 1

Calico Drake wanted to be Ghost Queen of the Myrrakai seas, and no one would let her buy a drink. She sat in a portside tavern, coins spread on wet wood, and no captain would meet her eyes. She had a stolen sloop, a crew of four, and a name no one had heard. A pirate is only as feared as her last raid. Calico had none. A scarred captain laughed when she asked to join his fleet. "Ghost?" he said. "I've never heard of any Ghost." His crew laughed with him. Calico smiled and did not argue. She left a copper coin on his table. On it she had scratched a wolf's head in a captain's hat, its mouth open in a snarl. Her mark. Soon every dock would know it. She knew the one target that would make her name. Below the harbor, chained to the seafloor, sat a sealed vault of weathered metal and stone. Kings had drowned their wealth there for safe keeping. No pirate had ever breached it. Every crew called it madness. That was exactly why Calico chose it. That night she dove alone. Her magic woke as she sank, a soft blue glow spilling from her hands. The light let her see the vault's face, its round windows and heavy locks. She pressed both palms to the metal. Blue fire seeped into the seams. The old bolts groaned. One by one, they cracked. The doors swung wide. Inside, gold shifted in the current. Calico ignored it. She swam past chests and coins to a single shelf, and there it sat: a crown ringed with coral and pearls, green and gold, made for a ruler of the tides. The Sea King's Crown. The treasure every pirate spoke of and none had found. She took it. Then she pressed her glowing hand to the inner wall and burned her mark into the stone. The blue-flamed wolf snarled where no one could miss it. Calico surfaced at dawn with the crown in her arms. She rowed back into the harbor and set it on the tavern dock in plain sight. The scarred captain saw it first. His laugh died. Crews crowded the boards, staring at the crown, then at the wolf mark scratched on coins in their pockets. "The vault," a woman whispered. "She cracked the vault." By noon the story had raced along every pier. The Ghost had done the impossible. Captains who had ignored her now sent men to find her ship. Calico had her name at last. But the crown was not just gold. It was a symbol old kings had killed for. As word spread, so did a new fear: whoever held it, others would come to take it. Calico had made her name known. Now the whole sea knew exactly what to steal from her.

Chapter 2

The crown made Calico famous. It also made her a mark. Three days after her heist, she counted her crew and saw the problem plain. Four sailors, and not one she trusted to guard the crown while she slept. Fame bought her stares on the docks. It did not buy her loyalty. She sat in her cramped cabin with the crown on her knees and knew the truth. One ambush would end her. That night the ambush came. Grappling hooks bit her rail. Boots hit her deck. A rival captain's men swarmed aboard, cutlasses drawn, hunting the crown. Calico's four sailors scattered like gulls. One dove overboard. The others dropped their blades and ran below. She stood alone at the mast with a stolen treasure and no one to defend it. Calico did not reach for a sword. She pressed both palms to the deck and called her fire. Blue light bled from her hands and raced across the planks. It did not burn the wood. It climbed the boarders instead, cold and bright, coiling up their legs. Men screamed and clawed at flames that gave no heat. They stumbled back toward their hooks. Then the fire gathered at the bow and took a shape. It rose on four legs, blue-green and glowing, with yellow eyes. A wolf made of her own magic. The beast turned its head and snarled at the boarders. They did not wait to learn if it could bite. They cut their lines and fled to their own ship, rowing hard into the dark. Calico stood alone with the wolf. It watched her, patient, waiting. She understood then what her fire had shown her. She did not need a crew of frightened men. She had something no ambush could scatter. She stepped forward and laid her hand on the wolf's neck. Its fur was cool under her palm. It did not fade. "You'll do," she said. Her four sailors crept back on deck at dawn. They saw the glowing wolf pacing her rail and stopped cold. Calico met their eyes. "Off my ship," she said. "All of you." They went without a word, over the side and onto the pier. She let them go. A guard that ran was worse than none. By noon the story reached every dock. The Ghost fought off a boarding alone. Her fire made a beast that drove armed men into the sea. No one laughed now. But the tale grew in the telling, the way all pirate tales do. A captain who could summon a fire-wolf was no longer just a thief with a crown. She was a captain worth following. And a captain worth killing. Calico had solved one night's ambush. By evening, three rival fleets had turned their prows toward her harbor, and this time they would not send four men.
