Chapter 1

Candy wanted to be a pharmacist someday. For now she ran the counter at the town's little apothecary, and she was proud of every prescription she filled right. But this morning the shop felt wrong. The line reached the door. A man near the front coughed into his sleeve. His hand shook as he set his slip on the counter. Behind him came a woman with the same cough. Then an older man, tremors rattling his fingers against the wood. Candy read their prescriptions. Cough syrup. Something for nerves. Something for a fever that spiked and dropped. Nothing looked wrong. But five people in one hour, all sick the same way, made her stomach tighten. She pulled the first slip closer. The dose was fine. The drug was fine. Yet she couldn't shake the feeling that filling these bottles would help no one. These people weren't sick from anything a cough syrup could fix. She just didn't know that yet. "I'll have these ready soon," she told the coughing man. He nodded and gripped the counter to stay steady. Candy checked her records. She kept careful notes on every regular. She matched the five sick faces to their addresses. Four of them lived on the same short stretch of old houses. That was too neat to be luck. She set the bottles down and picked up the phone instead. She called the town doctor's clinic. She told the nurse who answered about the coughs, the shaking hands, the fevers, and the four homes clustered together. The line went quiet. Then the nurse's voice dropped low. "Don't fill anything new for those addresses," she said. "Send them straight to us. And don't say why. There's an order." "An order about what?" Candy asked. "I can't tell you. Just send them." The nurse hung up. Candy stood with the dead phone in her hand. She understood two things at once. First, these people were not sick from anything on their prescriptions. Second, someone in town already knew the real cause and had chosen to keep it quiet. She turned back to the line. "I can't fill these today," she said. Her voice stayed steady even as heads lifted. "The clinic needs to see each of you first. Please go straight there." The coughing man frowned. "Is something wrong with the medicine?" "No," Candy said. "The medicine's fine. It just won't help you. The clinic will." One by one they left the shop. Candy locked the register and stared at the five unfilled slips on her counter. She had done the right thing. She was sure of it. But she had also just sent her neighbors toward a secret she wasn't allowed to know. And now she needed to find out what it was.
