Chapter 1

For seven days the ghost had hung in Casandra Videncia's studio, and for seven days her cards refused to speak of it. She sat at her reading table in dark blue and gold, clockwork stars glinting in her white hair, her deck warm in her hands. She could feel the spirit near the velvet curtains she had hung the day she opened this shop. But feeling was not knowing. To read a spirit, she needed an object from its old life. A ring, a coin, a button. Something to anchor the cards. She had nothing. So she dealt, and the cards fell blank as river stones. Casandra had spent her life finding the dead. Seven years ago her own daughter reached her through the Three of Cups. Last winter her daughter said she was tired of being found and went quiet. Since then, spirits fell silent whenever Casandra asked for her. This new ghost was different. It stayed. It wanted her. But it gave her no thread to pull. "Then show me who you were," Casandra said to the empty room. "I cannot read shadow." The air by the curtains shivered. A cold draft crossed her table. It did not fade. It moved. Casandra rose and followed it across the floor to the wall where an old mirror hung. She had bought the mirror with the shop and never looked hard at it. Its frame was thin dark gold clockwork set with tiny gold stars. Now the glass was not empty. A hazy figure stood inside it under a sky full of stars. A woman, made of pale light, arms at her sides, face turned toward Casandra. The ghost was not tethered to the room at all. It was tethered to the mirror. Casandra's breath caught. Here was her anchor. The mirror was the object of the spirit's old life. She did not need a ring or a coin. She needed only to lay her cards against the glass. She carried the deck to the mirror. She pressed one card flat to the cold surface, below the figure's feet. "I have you now," she whispered. She turned the card. The Tower. Casandra's hand went still. The Tower was her own card. It came up every time she read for herself, never for a stranger. She turned a second card against the glass. The Tower again. A third. The Tower. The spirit in the mirror lifted one pale hand and laid it against the glass, palm out, matching Casandra's own. The cards had spoken at last, and they gave her a truth she did not want. The ghost bound to her mirror was reading back the same card that belonged to her alone. Whatever haunted the studio was not a stranger. It knew her. And now she had to learn how.

Chapter 2

The Tower had told Casandra the ghost in her mirror was no stranger. To be sure, she needed a second voice. She always confirmed a reading with the other spirits who lived in her studio. So she cleared her table, held her deck, and called them by name. They came, but wrong. Pale shapes rose along the walls, a cluster of them, faces twisted with anger. Victorian men and women in high collars, mouths open, eyes burning white. They had never looked at her this way. She asked them one question. "Is the one in the mirror bound to me?" The room answered with violence. A cold gust knocked her lamp sideways. The spirits pressed close, their forms shivering like smoke. Her table rocked. The deck flew from her hands. Cards fell everywhere, dark blue and gold, spinning and sliding across the floor. Stars painted on their backs caught the light as they scattered. "Stop this," Casandra said. She gripped the edge of her table. "You have never turned on me. Why now?" The angriest figure drifted forward, a gaunt man in a long coat. He carried an old bag in one hand. His mouth moved but made no sound. Then she understood. They were not attacking her. They were guarding something. Every time she asked about the mirror, they raged. They did not want her to name the ghost inside it. Casandra knew fear. She had felt it for seven years, since her daughter went quiet. But she had never let fear stop a reading. She knelt among the fallen cards. She did not gather them to protect them. She read them where they lay. The cards had landed in a rough line pointing at the mirror. She traced them with her eyes, one by one, ignoring the wind that tore at her sleeves. The Moon. The High Priestess. The Tower again, face up, closest to the glass. The scatter itself was the reading. The spirits had thrown her own cards into an arrow aimed at the truth. "You cannot hide her from me," Casandra said. She rose slowly, her joints aching, clockwork stars loose in her white hair. "I have found the dead my whole life. I will not stop at my own door." The gaunt spirit lunged. Casandra held up one card, the Tower, flat toward him. He froze. The whole cluster froze. Then, all at once, they thinned and were gone. The wind died. The room went still. Casandra stood alone. The mirror glowed soft on the wall. The pale woman inside had not moved through any of it. She waited, calm, while the others screamed. Casandra gathered her cards from the floor with steady hands. The other spirits had failed to frighten her off. But their fury had told her something true. Whoever waited in the glass was hidden on purpose, kept from her by every dead soul she trusted. Only one reason made spirits guard a name that hard. It was a name she loved.

Chapter 3

The spirits had guarded a name. Casandra now believed the name was her daughter's. But belief was not proof. She stood in her workshop, the walls thick with gears and old clocks, the tall clockwork house quiet around her. She knew the danger. A wrong reading could break her. If she named the ghost her daughter and was wrong, grief would swallow what was left of her. She faced the mirror on the wall. The thin gold frame held stars and tiny gears. Inside the glass a pale woman floated under a night sky. She had not moved in days. Casandra needed a sign only her daughter could give. Her daughter had come to her first through one card. The Three of Cups. Casandra had not been searching then. She had not asked. Her daughter simply arrived. So Casandra would not ask now. She would test the ghost the same way. She shuffled her deck. Dark blue backs, gold stars, worn soft at the edges. She did not lay them in a spread. She held the whole stack against the cool glass and closed her eyes. "If you are mine," she said, "choose. I will not choose for you." She waited. Her hands shook. The house ticked. Nothing happened. A minute passed, then two. Doubt crept in. Maybe the silence of the other spirits meant nothing. Maybe she had built a hope from fear. Then the deck moved. Not from her fingers. A single card slid free from the middle and fell face up on the floor. Casandra looked down. She already knew. She made herself look anyway. Three of Cups. Her knees gave. She caught the table edge and lowered herself to the floor beside the card. She had feared The Tower. Her own card. A stranger's warning. But the ghost had reached past every other card and pulled the one only her daughter had ever used. No stranger knew that story. No stranger could. "It is you," Casandra whispered. "It has been you all along." In the mirror, the pale woman lifted her head. For the first time in seven days, she looked straight at Casandra. The eyes were her daughter's eyes. Casandra pressed her hand to the glass. It was cold. On the other side, her daughter raised a hand to match. Almost touching. A pane of silver between them. The joy lasted only a moment. Then Casandra remembered the last thing her daughter ever said. She was tired of being found. She had gone quiet on purpose. She had not wanted this. Casandra had her proof. The ghost was her lost daughter. But her daughter had not come back to be saved. She had come back trapped in a mirror she never chose. And now Casandra had to learn why her daughter was bound here, and whether freeing her meant losing her a second time.
