Chapter 1

Celestia walked the bright halls of the alien castle on Xenith. Its walls glowed pink, gold, and deep blue. She wanted the highest seat in the pantheon, and today she planned her next quiet move. Tiny green mice scurried along the jeweled floor beside her. She fed them crumbs and listened. They were her small spies in every corner of the castle. Then the air split. A glowing orb wrapped in black tendrils dropped before her, casting cold blue light. A butterfly with huge watching eyes fluttered above it. The older god had sent his messenger. The butterfly opened a humming book of swirling light. Its pages spoke the summons aloud. Celestia was called to judgment for reaching too high. She bowed her head, but only a little. "I will come," she said. The orb pulsed and vanished, leaving a burned mark on the bright floor. The quiet game was over. Now she had to face him.

Chapter 2

Celestia followed the burned mark down to a low chamber beneath the castle. A flat stone slab waited in the center, crowned with sharp crystal shards that pointed up like teeth. She stepped onto it alone. No ally sat beside her. The old god's shadow filled the far wall, and his silence pressed down harder than any voice. The watching butterfly fluttered in and opened its glowing book. Pages of light turned in the air. The charges spoke themselves: spying, reaching, ambition past her place. Tiny green mice peeked from cracks in the floor, but she did not call them. She would not hide behind small things now. Celestia lifted her chin. She spoke plainly. She named what she wanted. She named what she would not trade. She did not soften her voice to please him. Each word was chosen, but none were tricks. For once, she let him see the hunger she carried. A sleek void otter slid from the shadow at the old god's feet, ribs humming like a low harp. The sound shook the crystals on the slab. The old god finally turned his head. He looked at her. He truly looked. His silence broke. "I have watched long," he said. "You stand straight without a seat beside you. That is rarer than cleverness." He raised one hand over the glowing book. The pages rewrote themselves in bright lines. He spoke a title onto her shoulders, naming her goddess in full before the listening room. Celestia stepped down from the slab changed. She had a title now, granted, not stolen. But the highest seat was still not hers, and the other old gods had heard him give ground. Their eyes, she knew, were already turning.
