Chapter 1

Cernunnos walked the desert edge where stone met sand, searching for ground solid enough to hold what he intended to build. A stronghold required more than walls. It needed a foundation that wouldn't shift when wolves and warriors stood side by side, when forest clans looked to a king who wore both forms. He found it where glass met rock, a natural arena carved between cliffs. The statues were already there, horned figures watching over posts that had been bleached white by sun and time. Someone had built this place long ago for the same reason he needed it now. He walked the perimeter, feeling how the stone held firm beneath his feet. By sunset, he had driven the first practice posts deeper into the ground and marked the circle where challengers would stand. The training ground was ready. Now he would see who came. Three days later, the tower began to rise. He laid sandstone in circles, each ring wider than the last, building from the center outward. The stone was warm under his hands, holding heat even after the sun dropped. He worked through the nights when the desert cooled, placing each block with care. The tower needed multiple entrances so no clan would claim priority over another. Four doorways, one for each direction the clans would travel from. By the second week, the walls stood three times his height. When he raised the carved bands around the outer tower, he could see the training ground from the top level. The horned statues stood between them like sentries marking the path from test to gathering. Someone would walk that path soon, from the glass arena where they proved themselves to the sandstone hall where they would stand as equals. The stronghold was complete. The clans would come, or they would stay scattered. Either way, he had built the place where unity could begin.

Chapter 2

The stronghold stood ready, but Cernunnos knew stone alone wouldn't hold what he was building. The desert gave him sand and rock, enough to raise walls and mark boundaries. But warriors needed more than that. They needed wood that wouldn't snap under weight, materials the sand couldn't grow. Thorn arrived three days after the tower was finished, pulling a cart loaded with dark timber. The logs were heavier than desert scrub, dense enough that Cernunnos could smell the tar still clinging to the grain. Thorn set up his work table in the shade of the sandstone walls, stacking the bog wood on weathered benches. He didn't ask permission. He simply began carving, his hands moving over the wood like he was reading something written in its texture. By evening, the first warrior stood upright against the training stand, a figure twice the height of a man with a bronze-tipped spear gripped in wooden hands. Cernunnos walked a slow circle around it, testing the joints where Thorn had fitted the limbs. The wood held firm. He pushed against the warrior's chest with both palms, putting his full weight into it. The figure didn't shift. He stepped back and looked at Thorn, who was already reaching for another log. "How many can you make?" The question came out quieter than he intended. Thorn wiped tar from his knife and glanced at the stack of timber. "As many as the bog gives me. But I'll need more bronze if you want them armed." Cernunnos nodded once, the movement sharp enough to end the conversation. He had asked for warriors strong enough to guard the stronghold, and Thorn had delivered something that wouldn't break under desert wind or the weight of what was coming. The wooden figure stood silent beside the training posts, the first defender that hadn't required a test or a promise. He could see the path now, clearer than before. Wood and stone together. Crafted warriors standing where living ones had failed. The stronghold had walls. Now it had guards that wouldn't turn away.
