Chapter 1

The box arrived at Cherry Min'tea's borrowed room before breakfast, carried by a servant who would not meet her eyes. Inside lay a gold pendant shaped like a desert bloom, an amber stone burning at its center. There was no card. Cherry knew who it was from anyway. She had walked into fae territory three days ago to seduce a prince who had sworn off mortal lovers, and yesterday she had made that prince laugh and survived a spell he cast to push her out. She had expected the prince to send for her next. Not someone else. Glitterdust came through the door without knocking. She looked at the pendant in Cherry's palm and said, "A noble sent that. Not the prince." Cherry asked which noble. Glitterdust said, "One who collects. He heard the prince's magic slid off you. Now he wants to keep you on a shelf." Cherry asked how Glitterdust knew. Glitterdust said, "I know. Don't put it on." Cherry put it in her pocket instead and asked where the noble was. Glitterdust told her about a pavilion at the edge of the noble quarter — open stone columns, silk curtains, glass cases full of mortal things behind them. Rings. Letters. A child's shoe. "He shows them off," Glitterdust said. "If you walk in, you walk into a case. If you don't, he sends men." Cherry asked for a third door. Glitterdust said, "Refuse him before the prince hears. Loud enough that refusing you costs him more than keeping you would." Cherry walked to the pavilion alone. The noble was waiting inside beside a tall jeweled mirror set up like bait, colored glass winking along its frame. He smiled at her the way a man smiles at a bird he has already named. Cherry took the pendant out of her pocket and set it on the lip of a display case between them. She said she was not a curiosity. She said the prince had cast magic on her and stepped closer, not away, and that any fae who put a claim on her now was putting a claim on something the prince had not finished looking at. She said it loud. A servant by the curtain heard. Two nobles browsing the cases turned their heads. The noble's smile thinned. He picked up the pendant, weighed it, and set it back down on the glass. He told her to leave his pavilion. She did. Glitterdust was waiting at the corner. "He'll tell the prince before sundown," she said. "To save face. He'll say you threw yourself at his rival's name." Cherry asked if that was bad. Glitterdust said, "The prince will send for you tonight. He doesn't like being used as a shield." She did not soften it. Cherry started walking back to her room to decide what to wear.
