Ciara Candy spun her contest treat that morning, and by noon the rules changed under her feet. She was a small fairy with pink-and-blue cotton candy hair, and she wanted one thing this season: the Tanglewood Confectioner's Ribbon, won with a treat spun from her own magic. She had the treat now. It floated in her palms, a soft cloud that shimmered when she breathed on it. Then a runner pinned a new notice to the board, and Ciara's stomach dropped. The notice said every treat now needed a themed presentation. No bare plates. No open hands. Judges wanted a display that matched the confection. Ciara looked at her cloud. She had nothing to set it on. Judging started at dusk. She rushed to the one shop that might help. Elfy Elbert's Candy Craft Shop stood bright with lollipop walls and cotton candy trim. Elfy built the decoration theme for the Ribbon every year. If anyone owned a display, it was him. Inside, a short elf perched on a stool, painting a tiny ribbon onto a candy shelf. His pointed hat drooped, sugar-pink with blue and green flecks. He did not look up. "You look like a fairy who read the new rules," Elfy said. "You and half of Tanglewood." "I need a display," Ciara said. "Please. Judging is at dusk, and I have nowhere to put my treat." Elfy set down his brush. His grin faded into something serious. "Everyone came asking today. I lent out every piece I had." He pointed at empty hooks along the wall. "All gone." Ciara's throat tightened. She had spun her whole season into that cloud. Now it would sit on a plain plate and lose. Elfy studied her. He tilted his head, then hopped off the stool. "Follow me." He led her to the back, where a tall display leaned under a sheet. He pulled the cloth away. Grand golden shelves rose in tiers, lined with candy pieces and soft cotton tufts. A smaller side shelf held delicate ribbon-shaped decorations. "This one's mine," Elfy said. "Not for lending. I built it for the show floor centerpiece." He rubbed his chin. "But your treat is cotton candy. And this is dressed in cotton candy." He almost smiled. "It's a match." "You'd trust me with it?" Ciara asked. "I'd trust the manners on you," he said. "Everyone in Tanglewood says you give the best advice. So take some of mine." He looked hard at her. "If you win, this display wins too. If you break it, I break your good name." Ciara held her cloud close and nodded. "I won't break it." Elfy helped her lift the display onto a cart. It was heavier than it looked, and one back shelf wobbled where the ribbon pieces hung loose. He did not seem to notice. Ciara did. She now had a display. She also had a treat, a wobbling shelf, and only hours until dusk.

Ciara wheeled the golden display into a quiet corner and stepped back to look. Her cotton candy cloud sat on the top shelf, soft and shimmering. But the grand shelves stared back nearly bare. The little side shelf that once held ribbon decorations was empty now. She had used the last of them steadying the wobbly shelf. The treat looked small and lonely. Judges wanted a theme, and she had none. A cheerful chirp broke her thoughts. Her best friend, a small pink-and-blue bird with fluffy confection feathers, landed on the top shelf. The bird cocked her head at the empty spaces, then chirped again, sharp and quick, like a scold. "I know," Ciara said. "It's bare. And Elfy's shop has nothing left." She rubbed her temples. If the display looked plain, Elfy's name would suffer too. She had promised to protect it. The bird flew off. Ciara chased her out into the open air. There, past the contest tents, a bush blazed with color. Peppermint swirls, lollipops, and bright wrapped sweets tucked between green leaves. The bird pecked one loose and dropped it in Ciara's palm. "Candy," Ciara whispered. "Real candy, growing wild." She grinned. She could dress the shelves herself. She gathered lollipops and swirls until her arms were full. But as she worked, she spotted something else deep in the leaves. A single bloom of spun gold. Its petals looked airy and sugary, dazzling in the light. It matched her golden display perfectly. Ciara plucked it with care and hurried back. She arranged the wild candies along every shelf, filling the empty spaces. She set the golden flower beside her cloud, and both seemed to glow together. The bird chirped and fluffed her feathers, pleased. Ciara stepped back. The display no longer looked bare. It looked full, themed, alive. She had solved it. Relief loosened her chest. Then a runner in a judge's sash walked past and stopped cold. She stared at the golden flower. Her face went pale. "Where did you get that?" the runner asked. "From a bush," Ciara said. "Just past the tents." The runner shook her head slowly. "That's a golden bloom. They're rare. Protected." She lowered her voice. "Contestants aren't allowed to pick them. If a judge sees it on your display, you'll be disqualified." Ciara's stomach dropped. She looked at the flower glowing beside her cloud. It made the whole display sing. Take it off, and the theme fell flat again. Leave it on, and she lost everything. The bird landed on the golden petals and chirped, soft and worried. Ciara did not answer. She had filled the shelves. She had matched the theme. And she had done it with the one thing that could get her thrown out before dusk.

The runner was already leaving. He turned on his heel and walked toward the next tent, sash swinging. Ciara stood frozen beside her display, the golden bloom glowing between the wild candies. She still did not know one thing. She had picked this bloom, yes. But what if a bloom fell on its own? What if someone gave one as a gift? The rule might not cover that. She needed the answer before dusk. She chased after him. "Wait, please!" she called. "I have a question!" But the runner slipped into a crowd of bakers and vanished. Ciara's wings drooped. She stopped near a tall hall built of swirling cotton candy and glossy lollipops, a golden flower crowning its roof. Inside, at the long judging table, a huge figure sat alone. He was a giant, and he looked mean. Purple and orange cotton candy hair curled above a stern face. A judge's robe hung off his wide shoulders. He held a lollipop like a tiny scepter and licked it slowly. Bakers passing the hall gave him a wide path. Ciara nearly turned back too. But she had no one else to ask. She stepped up to the table. "Excuse me, sir. You're a judge?" "Giant Greyl," he said. He set down the lollipop. "You look scared. Most do. It's the face. I can't help the face." Ciara laughed before she could stop herself. Her shoulders loosened. "I have a question about the golden blooms. The rule says contestants can't pick them. But what if one falls? Or what if someone gives you one?" Greyl thought. He tapped a finger on the table. "Doesn't matter how you got it. Rule's about the bloom, not the picking. If it's on your table, you're out. Fallen, gifted, bought. Same answer." Ciara's chest tightened. "So there's no way to keep it." "No way," Greyl said. "Sorry, small fairy. I don't make the rules. I just eat things." He glanced past her, toward her display in the corner. His eyes found the golden bloom. "That yours?" Ciara nodded, throat dry. "Then take it off," Greyl said, gentle now. "Before another judge walks by. I didn't see it. But the next one might." She understood. He was giving her a chance. Ciara hurried back to her display. Her bird landed on the shelf and chirped, sharp and worried. Ciara reached for the golden bloom and lifted it free. The shelves dimmed at once. The theme fell flat. The wild candies looked scattered and plain without the flower to tie them together. She held the bloom in both hands, safe now from disqualification. But her display was broken again. Dusk was coming. And she had nothing golden left to make it sing.
