Chapter 1

Cigarette pressed her hand to the wall of the crystal tower and felt her fingers pass through it. The stone had gone soft as smoke. All morning the kingdom had done this—towers flickering, spires half-fading into another world. The thief had stolen the starseed three nights ago, and without it, the whole court was slipping loose from this world. Cigarette had one goal now. Find the trail before her people vanished for good. But there was no trail. She had searched every garden and every spire. The thief left no tracks, no scent, nothing. She had no idea where the starseed had gone. Inside the throne room, King Four Loko paced on legs thick as tree roots, his gauzy wings twitching with every step. He was small but built like a fist, and right now that fist wanted to hit something. "You found nothing," he said. It wasn't a question. "The thief left no trail," Cigarette said. "I can't chase what I can't see." Beside him, Queen Smirnoff sat still. Silver lines glowed faint across her skin, dimming as the room flickered. She was fading too, Cigarette realized. The queen lifted one thin hand. "Then don't chase the thief," she said quietly. "Chase the starseed. It's alive. It calls to its own." Cigarette stopped. "How?" The queen rose. Her long dress dragged through a patch of floor that had turned to nothing. "The seed and my blood share one light," she said. "Cut me, and the drop will lean toward it." King Four Loko grabbed her wrist. "No. You're already fading fastest. You give blood, you might slip away first." Queen Smirnoff pulled her wrist free. Her purple eyes did not blink. "Then I fade knowing I helped." She looked at Cigarette. "Do it quickly." Cigarette's hands shook. She did not want this. But the tower behind her had gone half-clear, and through it she could see stars that did not belong to this sky. Time was almost gone. She took the queen's hand and pricked one finger with a thorn. A single silver drop welled up. It trembled, then rolled sideways across the queen's palm—against gravity, pointing north through the wall. "There," Queen Smirnoff whispered. Her voice was fainter now. Her whole arm had turned to mist. Cigarette watched the drop hold its line, steady as a needle. She finally had her direction. But the queen swayed and sat hard on the throne, her legs already gone see-through to the knee. "Go," King Four Loko said. His voice cracked. "Follow it now. She bought you the trail. Don't waste what it cost her." Cigarette pressed the drop into a small glass vial and sealed it. The silver still leaned north. She turned toward the fading wall and stepped through where the stone used to be. Behind her, the queen's light dimmed one shade more.

Cigarette flew north until her wings would not obey. The vial's silver blood still leaned ahead, steady as ever. But the cold crept into her wing-joints and stiffened them. Each beat came slower. The open ground below held no tree, no rock, no shelter. If she landed here, the cold would set in her wings for good, and she would never fly again. She scanned the dark for anything warm. Then she heard water. Not a river—something lighter, chiming like glass. She turned toward the sound and dropped low. In a hollow of ground stood a small cascade, its water frozen mid-fall into clear layers. It glowed faint blue, and warmth drifted off it. She landed at its edge and pressed her stiff wings toward the light. Feeling crept back. She almost wept. "You'll want to move off my falls," a voice said. Cigarette spun. A mermaid fairy floated in the pool below the cascade, her tail curled beneath her. Purpose. Cigarette knew her from the court, though they had never spoken much. Purpose had left before the starseed was stolen. Her large eyes fixed on the vial at Cigarette's belt. "That's the queen's blood," Purpose said. Her voice went flat. "Silver. She cut herself, didn't she." "To find the starseed," Cigarette said. "I'm following it north. My wings froze. I only need to rest." Purpose rose halfway from the water. "Rest, then. But I should warn you. Three nights back a man passed through here going north. Wings like a torn kite. Drunk, loud, carrying something wrapped tight against his chest." She flicked her tail. "He drank from my pool and laughed the whole time." Cigarette's heart kicked. "Did you see what he carried?" "A light. Under the cloth. It pulled at everything." Purpose's face hardened. "I know him. Jack Daniels. He used to guard the court gate. Big as a wall, twice as stupid, always drunk." She looked at the vial again. "Your blood points where he went. He took your seed." Cigarette gripped the falls' cold rim. She had a name now. A thief with a face and a weakness. "How far ahead?" "Three nights, slow and staggering." Purpose sank back into the pool. "You could catch a drunk. If your wings hold." Cigarette held her wings to the glowing water until they warmed through and beat clean again. The cold no longer lived in them. She checked the vial. Still north, still sure. "Come with me," she said. "You know his face." Purpose shook her head slowly. "I don't leave water. Not far." She pointed north with her chin. "But go fast. The seed's light was fading under that cloth. Whatever he's doing to it, it's dying." Cigarette lifted from the falls. Her wings held. She flew north with a name, a warning, and a race she had not known she was losing.

Chapter 3

Cigarette flew on past the falls. The vial's silver blood still leaned north. Soon the air changed. A wall of frozen wind poured down toward her, colder than anything she had crossed before. Her wing-joints stiffened in seconds. The last cold had crept in slow. This one bit at once. She knew the truth without stopping to think it. If she pushed into that wind, her wings would freeze solid, and she would drop before she reached Jack Daniels. She saw him then, far ahead. A broad blue shape staggered across the ice. His torn wings dragged. He held something wrapped tight to his chest. The starseed. Even at this distance she saw the faint light dying under the cloth. Her wings slowed. She could not fly through the wind. But she did not have to fly. She dropped to the ice and folded her wings against her back, out of the cold's reach. Then she ran. The ice cut her feet. The wind shoved at her. She lowered her head and pushed. Jack Daniels swayed, drunk and slow, laughing at nothing. He never looked back. She closed the gap step by step while her wings stayed tucked and warm. "Jack Daniels!" she shouted. He turned. Up close he was huge, twice her size, all muscle. His eyes were red and wet. He grinned like they were old friends. "Little court moth," he slurred. "Come to freeze with me?" "Give me the seed." She held out her hand. "It's dying. You're killing the whole kingdom." "Kingdom." He spat the word. He clutched the bundle tighter. "The kingdom never gave me anything. Now it gives me light." He lifted the cloth an inch. The seed glowed weak and gray. "Warm. Keeps the cold off. Mine." Cigarette lunged for it. He was drunk but strong. He swung one arm and knocked her flat on the ice. Her breath went out. He laughed and stumbled back, still holding the bundle. She pushed up. She could not win by force. So she watched his feet. He staggered on the slick ice, off balance with every step. She rolled under his next swing and shoved his knee hard from the side. Jack Daniels went down. His arms flew out to catch himself. The wrapped seed slipped from his grip and skidded across the ice. Cigarette scrambled after it. She reached it first and snatched it up. The cloth was cold. The light inside was almost gone. She tore the cloth open. The seed touched the air and the open sky. Its glow flickered, then steadied, then grew. Warmth spread into her hands. Jack Daniels crawled toward her on the ice. "Give it back," he moaned. "I need it." Cigarette clutched the bare seed to her chest and stood. She had it. But its light was still faint, half-drowned from three nights in the dark. And Jack Daniels was rising to his feet behind her.

Chapter 4

Cigarette held the bare starseed to her chest. Its light grew warmer in her hands, but faint still. Behind her, Jack Daniels struggled up on the ice. Ahead of her stood the wall of frozen wind. It poured down from the north, colder than anything. She had the seed. Now she had to carry it home through the wind that had beaten her wings. If she failed, the seed died, and the queen died with it. Jack Daniels lunged. She dodged his grab and ran for the wind wall. The blast hit her like a slap. Her tucked wings ached even folded. She could not push through this on foot. The cold would kill the seed first. She stopped, gasping, and looked down at the light in her hands. Then she remembered. The seed revives in open air. Its light spreads warmth. She had felt it thaw her frozen fingers moments ago. She held the starseed straight out toward the wall of wind. The seed flared. Heat rolled from it in a slow wave. Where the light touched the frozen wind, the wall softened. A narrow gap opened, warm and still. Cigarette stepped in. She held the seed forward like a torch and the gap moved with her. Warmth pressed the cold aside step by step. She walked clear through the wall and out the far side, onto open ice. Behind her, Jack Daniels reached the wind. He had no seed, no warmth. The wall shoved him back and he crumpled on the ice, shivering, done chasing. His voice thinned to nothing in the wind. Cigarette flew now. Her wings spread free in the warm air behind the seed. She raced south over the frozen cascade where the mermaid fairy had helped her. She did not stop. The seed's light steadied and brightened with every mile of open sky. The kingdom's towers came into view, pale and thin, half-faded from the world. She flew low through the crystal spires and into the great hall. King Four Loko stood over a couch, his broad shoulders bent, one hand pressed to a shape that was barely there. The shape was Queen Smirnoff. Cigarette could see the couch through her body. "I have it," Cigarette said. She lifted the seed high. "It's alive." The king turned. His hard red eyes went wide. He looked at the queen, then back at Cigarette. "Give it to her. Quickly." Cigarette pressed the warm seed into the queen's faint hands. Smirnoff's fingers closed around it. The light sank into her and her body grew solid again. Color returned to her face. She drew a full breath. But her hand shook. She looked at the seed, then up at Cigarette, and her joy broke. "It's cracked," the queen whispered. A thin split ran across the seed's surface. Light leaked from the crack, faint and steady. "Three nights in the cloth. It's dying still. This will not last."

Chapter 5

Queen Smirnoff cupped the cracked seed in her hands. Light leaked from the split, thin and steady. Cigarette watched the leak and felt cold in her chest. The seed was safe here, but not safe enough. Jack Daniels was still alive on the ice. He knew the warm passage through the wind wall. He could walk it and come back for the seed while it lay cracked and weak. As long as he lived free out there, the seed was never truly hers to guard. "He'll come back," Cigarette said. "He found the passage once. He can find it again." King Four Loko's jaw tightened. "Then close it." Cigarette understood. The passage only stayed open where the seed's warmth touched the frozen wind. Take the warmth away, and the wall froze solid again. But she could not carry the dying seed back into the cold. That would kill it. She needed another warmth. She thought of the glowing cascade north of the kingdom. Frozen, yet warm. A steady heat that never left the ice. She had rested there once. The mermaid fairy lived in its glassy water. "I need the falls," Cigarette said. "The water there holds heat on its own." She flew north again, alone, over the frozen ground. The cascade rose ahead, layered sheets of glassy water frozen mid-fall, shimmering and warm. Purpose lifted from a pool at its base. Her tail curled below her. She had helped Cigarette before, when her wings froze. Now she looked at the empty hands and frowned. "You lost it?" Purpose asked. "No. It's home. But the thief still knows the way in." Cigarette pointed south, toward the wind wall. "I need warm water from your falls. Enough to freeze the passage shut behind me." Purpose studied her, then nodded. She swept her hands through the glassy sheets. The frozen water broke loose in warm, floating shards that hung in the air and glowed. "It stays warm until it meets true cold," she said. "Then it freezes hard. Harder than what's there." Cigarette gathered the warm shards and flew to the wind wall. The passage still hung open, a narrow warm gap in the roaring cold. She hovered at its mouth and cast the shards inside. They drifted the length of the gap, glowing. The cold hit them. The warm water froze at once, filling the passage with thick clear ice. The gap sealed. The wind wall stood whole again, one solid sheet from ground to sky. Cigarette pressed her hand to the new ice. Nothing came through. On the far side, somewhere on the open ground, Jack Daniels had no way back. The seed was safe from him now. She flew home. But the cold thought stayed with her. She had shut out the thief. She had not saved the seed. It still cracked in the queen's hands, leaking light, dying slow. That was the next fight, and it was already losing.
