Chapter 1

Claire slid her laptop closed and stared at the empty supply cabinet in the corner of her classroom. Thirty kids deserved better than worksheets and one flickering projector. She needed equipment that let them build, test, and argue over real problems. The email came Tuesday morning from someone who owned a landscaping business. He'd seen her students at the farmer's market last month, selling herb plants to raise money for science supplies. He wanted to help. His offer sat in her inbox like a gift and a trap at the same time: ten robotics kits, a 3D printer, and enough materials to run experiments for a year. All she had to do was display his business crest in her classroom and mention his company name whenever parents or visitors asked about the new equipment. Claire walked past the wooden pavilion outside his office that afternoon, studying the painted crest on the beam above. His reach in Ashburrow was everywhere. She pictured that same crest hanging in her room, watching her teach, marking every success as partly his. She deleted the email without responding and opened a new funding search instead. But the next morning, she found a package outside her classroom door. Inside sat a single robotics kit with a handwritten note tucked on top. No strings attached this time, the landscaper had written. Just for one student who needs it. Claire turned the box over in her hands, searching for the catch. The kit was expensive, real, exactly what her kids needed. She carried it to her desk and set it down, then pulled out her grant application and started rewriting again. This time she added a line about community members who understood what learning could look like. She would accept the single kit and nothing more. Her classroom would become the best in town on her own terms, one honest piece at a time. Thursday afternoon, the landscaper showed up at her classroom door holding a worn leather pouch. Gold coins pressed against the fabric, moss clinging to the edges like it had been sitting in his greenhouse. He set it on her desk without asking. Enough to buy everything you need, he said. Claire stared at the pouch, then at him. She thought about her thirty students and the grant deadline two weeks away. She picked up the pouch and handed it back. I need to know my classroom belongs to my kids, she told him. Not to anyone's name on the wall. He took the pouch and nodded, but his smile had changed. She watched him walk away and felt the weight lift from her chest. Her classroom would still have one flickering projector tomorrow, but it would be hers.
