Chapter 1

Co wanted to be a movie actor, but tonight he was filming himself unbox a phone case. The camera light glowed red. He sat at his computer desk, the sleek monitor and matching chair his whole studio. Behind him hung a green screen panel, smooth and bright. He had bought it to place himself in movie scenes. Instead he used it to fake a fancy background for sponsors. He wore his white shirt with bold black letters across the chest: LETS TALK. It was the only clean shirt he owned. He forced a smile and held the phone case up. "You guys are gonna love this," he said. His voice sounded thin. He hated it. Half a million people followed his channel. He unboxed gadgets, reviewed snacks, filmed reactions. The money paid his rent. But every night he opened the same computer, sat in the same chair, and talked to a lens instead of a director. He was famous for being no one. His phone buzzed. He almost ignored it. Then he read the name: a casting office. His thumb shook as he tapped the screen. The email was short. A film studio was casting a small speaking role. A crime thriller. They had seen his videos. They liked his face and his voice. They wanted him to send a taped audition by midnight. Co looked at the clock. It was nine. He stared at the green screen behind him. He had spent two years learning to light it, key it, drop new worlds behind his head. He had done it for phone cases. Now he could do it for something real. He stood and cleared the desk. He knocked the phone case to the floor and left it. He pulled up the audition script on his monitor and read it twice. A getaway driver, cornered, lying to a cop. Co knew that fear. He had felt it every day he pretended to be happy on camera. He set the green panel behind him. He loaded a city street, wet and dark, the kind of scene from the action movies he watched on his big screen at night. He hit record. He was not selling anything now. He let his face go cold. He let his hands shake for real. He said the driver's lines like a man who wanted to live. Take after take. Sweat ran down his neck. The LETS TALK letters on his shirt stuck to his skin. At 11:52 he had one good take. He watched it back. For the first time, he did not see a content creator. He saw a driver. He saw someone else. He attached the file and sent it. The screen said delivered. Co sat in the quiet. He had just quit being a man who talks to a camera. He had started being a man who waits for a call from people who decide whether he acts. The phone case still lay on the floor. He did not pick it up.
