Chapter 1

Colt Madison came back to Hazeburn to win back the woman whose name he'd inked over his heart. He left town six years ago without a word to her. Now he parked his truck outside the feed store and felt the whole street turn cold. A rancher he'd known since boyhood crossed to the far sidewalk. Two women by the diner stopped talking and stared. He knew the look. The old story had beaten him here. He went inside for fence wire. The clerk took his money but watched his hands the whole time. "You're the one who left her at the altar," she said. "That's the word, anyway." Colt set the coins down slow. The story had grown teeth. He hadn't left her at an altar. He'd left to keep his father's debts from swallowing her too. But every mouth in town had added to the tale, and now each telling warned her off before he could say one true word. He'd tried calling. She didn't answer. He'd tried the diner, and her friends stepped between them like a fence. Talk couldn't beat talk. He needed to reach her without a crowd rewriting him first. So he drove out to the ranch where she'd grown up. The two-story house sat quiet, wood siding warm in the last light, stone porch steps swept clean. Her truck was gone. Good. He didn't want her there yet. From his pocket he took the compass. His grandfather had carried it through the war. Polished case, glass face, needle sharp and true. Colt had promised her once he'd always point himself home to her. He'd broken that promise. The compass said what his mouth couldn't against six years of gossip. He set it on the top step where she'd see it. Under it he slid a folded note. Four lines. Why he left. What he'd been paying off. That the leaving was to protect her, not to shame her. No story in town could carry that but his own hand. He was halfway down the steps when gravel crunched behind him. Her truck. She stepped out, keys tight in her fist, jaw set hard. Her eyes went to him, then to the compass on the step. "You've got nerve," she said. Her voice shook. "Everybody told me you'd show up with some line." "No line." He pointed at the step. "Read that first. Then throw me off your land if you want." She climbed the stairs. She picked up the compass and turned it in her hand, and her thumb found the engraving on the back. She went still. She did not open the note. She did not throw the compass. "Three days," she said at last. "You get three days to prove the note's true. Lie to me once and you're done here forever." Colt breathed out. The gossip hadn't closed the door. But she'd set a clock on him now.
