Chapter 1

Cranky Bunny threw the last carrot at the fence and shouted at everyone to leave him alone. He didn't want to be mean. His crankiness flared up like a rash he couldn't scratch, and when it hit, sharp words spilled out before he could stop them. The other bunnies scattered. He hated that most of all. His best friend, Julie, always came running on his worst days, and he was terrified he would push her away for good. Julie found him hunched under the fence, ears flat. She wore her polka dot dress, and she didn't flinch when he glared. "You're not mad at me," she said. "You just don't have anywhere to go when it gets loud in your head." Cranky Bunny opened his mouth to snap. Then his ears drooped. She was right. When the crankiness struck, he stood in the open where everyone watched him lose his temper. He had no corner. No door to shut. "Come on," Julie said. She held out her hand. She led him past the tall grass to a small wooden hutch he had never noticed. Green moss dressed the roof. Carved flowers curled around the tiny door. Bushes hugged its walls like a hug it was too shy to give. "I fixed it up for you," Julie said. "For the hard days." Cranky Bunny stepped inside. The room was quiet. Soft. His breathing slowed. On a small cushion sat a plushie shaped like a carrot, stitched from mismatched fabric squares, every color crooked and warm. "I made that too," Julie said from the doorway. "For when you need something to hold." Cranky Bunny picked up the carrot plushie. He squeezed it. The tight, hot feeling in his chest loosened. He sat down on the cushion and pressed the plushie under his chin. For the first time in a long time, the crankiness didn't win. It simply faded. "You can come here whenever it flares," Julie said. "Instead of yelling. Nobody has to see." He wiped his eyes. "I threw a carrot at the fence." "I know." She grinned. "You have terrible aim." He laughed. The sound surprised him. Then his ears twitched. If the hutch was his now, if this quiet room could hold his worst moods, he wouldn't need Julie there every single time. That thought pinched him. He looked up at her in the doorway, half in shadow. "You'll still come?" he asked. "Even if I have my own spot?" Julie's smile flickered. She glanced down the path, then back at him, and did not answer right away. "I have to go home soon," she said. "My family's leaving Easter Corner for a while." Cranky Bunny's grip tightened on the plushie. He had won his quiet room. But the one person he counted on most was about to be far away, and he didn't know when she would return.
