Chapter 1

Dann Silverman stepped onto his wide veranda with two mugs in hand. He had poured a second cup out of habit, the way a man does when he's tired of sitting alone. He wanted someone to share the quiet with. That was the shape of the life he was after. A shadow moved on the rattan loveseat. A man sat there in the dark, hands folded, calm as anything. Dann almost said nothing. Silence was his comfort, after all. But the stranger was handsome, and the night was long, and the second mug was already warm in his hand. "I think you've got the wrong porch," Dann said gently. The man startled, then laughed. He pointed past the swirling lamppost at the edge of the yard, toward the tall Victorian with its yellow windows and ivy-choked trim. "Mine looks just like yours in the dark," he said. His name was offered. Dann offered his back. The stranger stood to leave, then paused. Dann held out the second mug. The man sat back down on the loveseat, and Dann lowered himself beside him. Neither one spoke. For the first evening in a long while, the quiet had company.

Chapter 2

The next evening, Thorne returned the empty mug and asked Dann to come see the Victorian for himself. Dann followed him across the dark yard. The house loomed above them, all sharp peaks and stained glass, ivy clawing the trim. Bats stitched the sky. Dann told himself the chill was only the wind. Thorne held the heavy door open. Dann stepped inside. The lock clicked behind him, soft and final. The entryway was not an entryway at all. A giant crib stood against the wall. A rocking chair built for someone Dann's size creaked on its own. A pink bear taller than the coat rack watched him with stitched eyes. Thorne smiled and offered his hand. "Come further in," he said. His voice was warm, the same calm voice from the porch. Dann's feet moved before his mind caught up. In the corner of the next room, stacked neatly to his waist, sat a tower of thick white diapers, each one sized for a grown man. Dann's mouth went dry. He had wanted quiet company. He had not wanted this. He turned on his heel, walked back to the door, and let himself out without a word. The lock did not stop him going. But something in what he thought he wanted had cracked clean through.

Back home, Dann sat in his entryway with his coat still on. His pocket felt heavy. He reached in and pulled out a giant pacifier, pink and glossy. He did not remember taking it. He set it on the side table and stared. The pull started small. A thought of the rocking chair built for two. A thought of Thorne's calm voice. By morning, the pull was a rope around his ribs. He tried to ignore it. He made coffee. He sat on the porch. The wind moved through the gnarled tree between the yards, and the chime hanging from its dead branch rang soft and slow. Each note pointed him toward the Victorian. Dann stood. He told himself he would walk out and throw the pacifier into the weeds. He would cut the rope. He carried it across the yard, past the chime tree, up to the heavy door. His hand lifted to knock. It did not throw. It did not turn back. He stood there with the pacifier pressed to his chest and understood he had lost the small fight. He wanted to know what the two-seater rocker felt like with someone beside him. The door opened before he knocked. Thorne smiled. Dann stepped inside.

Thorne closed the door behind him. The entryway smelled of cedar and warm milk. Thorne did not speak. He only placed a hand on Dann's back and guided him down the hall to the nursery. The two-seater rocker waited by the window. Its wood was warm and worn smooth. Pale cushions sank under Dann's weight when he sat. Thorne sat beside him. The chair rocked. Dann's shoulders dropped for the first time in days. Across the room, a blue teddy bear sat propped against the crib. Its small smile met Dann's eyes. Something in his chest loosened. He should have felt foolish. He did not. He felt, against all sense, like he had come home. "Lay down for me," Thorne said, nodding to the broad changing table. Dann stood without deciding to. The wood was sturdy under his back. A folded towel rested near his hip. Thorne worked with calm hands. Dann did not stop him. Thorne slid Dann's pants away and lifted a thick white diaper from the shelf. The plastic crinkled. Tabs snapped at Dann's hips. The padding was soft and strange and warm. Dann stared at the ceiling and felt his old life go quiet. Thorne helped him sit up. Dann's face burned, but his hands were steady. He had come here looking for someone to sit beside him in silence. He had found that. He had also found this. He did not yet know if the trade was one he could live with.

Thorne lifted Dann from the changing table and set him on his feet. The thick white diaper crinkled with each small step. Thorne led him to the crib and lowered the side rail. Dann climbed in without a word. Thorne reached for a glass bottle on the shelf. Pale blue liquid swirled inside it, catching the lamplight like a slow tide. "Drink," Thorne said. He pressed the nipple to Dann's lips. Dann meant to ask what it was. He drank instead. The warmth came faster than he expected. It spread through his chest, down his arms, into his legs. His grip on the bottle slackened. The room softened at its edges. He tried to form the question. His tongue would not move. Thorne eased him down onto the mattress and drew the blanket to his chin. Then he settled into a deep blue armchair beside the crib, hands folded, watching. Dann saw the shape of him through heavy lashes. He felt safe. He felt tricked. Both at once. Sleep took him before he could choose which one mattered. The bottle rolled from his fingers and came to rest against the bars.
