Dylan Drakon's dream is forging a bond with the wild dragon that only answers to one mortal in a generation.
Dylan Drakon knelt in the snow and opened his metal ledger. Ice-etched columns held months of dragon sightings. Landing spots. Wing angles. Departure times. He traced a finger across the rows and felt his breath catch. The lines all bent toward one place. The bond he had hunted his whole life waited at the end of that curve. He drew the convergence point on the map. His hand stopped moving. The spot sat deep in the hollow his father had forbidden him as a boy. No tracker returned from it whole. Dylan climbed the ridge to confirm it with his own eyes. A pale elk with antlers of clear ice watched him pass and did not flee. That alone should have warned him. At the hollow's mouth stood three blackened trees, their branches clawing the sky like trapped hands. Beyond them, a broken platform of ice glowed from within, lava bleeding through every crack. Heat and frost fought in the same breath. This was the place. Dylan closed the ledger and stepped past the trees.
Dylan stepped onto the cracked ice and froze. A figure already stood at the platform's edge, back turned, arms raised. Above them both, the dragon carved slow circles through the steam. Dylan's chest tightened. Months of patient tracking, and someone else had reached the heart of the hollow first. Behind the stranger rose a tall stone shrine, its cracked face strung with red prayer flags and ringed by small offerings. Dylan knew the shape from old stories. This was a place where people came to beg for a soul-bonded dragon. The stranger was no rival tracker. The stranger was a believer, kneeling for a gift Dylan had spent his life trying to earn. At the stranger's feet sat a wooden chest carved with a black and emerald dragon crest. Beside it, a basin of blackened stone held burnt scales, melted snow pooling at its rim. The stranger had been burning offerings, calling the dragon down with fire and faith. Dylan's stomach turned. He had measured wing angles. This person had simply asked. The dragon dipped lower. Dylan opened his mouth to shout, to warn, to claim — and stopped. He closed his ledger and set it in the snow. For the first time in his life, he did nothing. The dragon's shadow passed over them both, and only one shadow lingered.
The dragon's shadow lifted away. The stranger lowered their arms and turned. Frost clung to their long coat, and a small winged raccoon with a frosted nose perched on their shoulder, blue wings folded tight. At their feet, a bright horned creature with rainbow fur sat beside the burnt basin — the living offering that had called the dragon down. Dylan stood very still. He had not run. He had not measured. He had only watched. The stranger's eyes met his. There was no pity in them, only recognition. They knelt beside the carved chest and lifted its lid. Inside, wrapped in pale cloth, lay a pocket journal bound in worn leather, a golden dragon stamped across its cover. "You tracked," the stranger said. "I prayed. Neither is the bond." They held the small journal out across the snow. "This shows the path to a dragon that answers a third way. Take it." Dylan's hand shook as he reached. His own frost-stained journal still sat in the snow behind him, full of angles and dates. He picked up the offered book instead. It was warm. Symbols he did not know shimmered faintly through the leather, and a map bled into view along the first page. He closed his fingers around it. The dragon he had hunted for months was gone, bonded to another. But something else had begun. Dylan turned from the shrine, the small journal pressed to his chest, and stepped back toward the warring ice and lava with a path he had not chosen and could not yet read.
