Chapter 1

Princess Elara Frostwyn hid a peace letter inside her glove while the war council cheered a fresh victory. Her people had raided the rival court at dawn and burned three supply sleds. Now the generals wanted more blood, not a marriage that could end the winter wars. But Elara still believed the enemy heir, Liang Xuefeng, could be reached. A letter to him was her only path. If anyone found it, they would call her a traitor to her own crown. She slipped out during the feast and rode her frostwing dragon across the ice. Crystalline scales caught the moonlight as the dragon carried her low over frozen hills. She had picked a meeting spot no army would guard. An old chapel of frozen stone stood alone in the snow, its icicles hanging like teeth from the roof. Liang Xuefeng waited inside. He wore white robes stitched with pale snowflakes, a small crown resting in his dark hair. He did not reach for a weapon. He only watched her through the chapel's cracked ice window. "Your soldiers killed two of my scouts this morning," he said. His voice stayed calm, which made the words harder to bear. "You ask me to trust you the same day." "I didn't order the raid," Elara said. She pulled off her glove and held out the letter. "I came to stop the next one. Read it." He took the paper. His blue eyes moved down the lines. She had written a plan for a truce, a shared patrol, a first small trade of grain. Her hands shook, but not from the cold. Before he could answer, a horn sounded across the hills. Torches spread along the ridge. Her own court had followed her. A rider shouted her name and the word traitor, and the cry passed from mouth to mouth. Elara turned back to Liang. "Go. If they take you, there is no peace left at all." He folded the letter and pushed it into his sleeve. "I will read the rest," he said. "That is all I can promise." Then he ran for the far door and vanished into the dark. The torches reached the chapel. Her uncle, the war general, dragged her from the frozen steps. He had seen the enemy heir flee. He had seen her let him go. "You met with him," the general said. His grip bruised her arm. "You are no princess of this court now." They bound her hands and led her home in chains. The council stripped her title before dawn. But Liang Xuefeng carried her words across the ice, and he had not thrown them away. Elara had lost her crown to reach him. Now she had nothing left to protect except the fragile chance she had just bought.
