Chapter 1

Elena Gilbert stirred her soda and tried to guess which brother she loved. Across the taproom, Stefan bent over his phone, texting Caroline about the cure plant. He hadn't looked at Elena's face in an hour. He looked at her like a map to a treasure buried in Fell's Church. She wanted to choose between him and his brother without breaking the bond between them. But she couldn't choose while she couldn't even read her own heart. "You keep watching him," Bonnie said. She slid into the booth across from Elena. Bonnie was Elena's oldest friend, the one who never dressed up a hard truth. "You watch him like you're waiting for a grade." "He needs my help," Elena said. "That's not what I asked." Bonnie leaned in. "Do you love him, or do you love being useful to him?" Elena opened her mouth. Nothing honest came out. Stefan's texts, the plant, the graveyard ritual, the wait for the full moon. It had swallowed everything. She realized she couldn't remember the last time Stefan asked how she felt. The front door swung open. Matt Donovan walked in, order pad in hand, sleeves pushed up. He was Elena's ex, blond and steady, the boy she had once broken up with. He set a water glass down at the next table without spilling a drop. He saw her watching Stefan. He stopped. "You did that with me," Matt said. He didn't soften it. "Waited for me to turn into somebody else. Watched me like that. Waiting." Elena's face went hot. "Matt—" "I'm not mad. Not anymore." He shrugged. "But you're doing it again. He's using you and calling it a partnership. You're calling it love because it keeps you busy." Bonnie said nothing. She just looked at Elena, letting Matt's words sit there. Elena turned back to Stefan. He was still on his phone. She waited for him to feel her stare and look up. He didn't. A minute passed. He typed, deleted, typed again. To Caroline. About the plant. Never about her. And Elena finally understood what she had been asking wrong. She had been asking who she loved. The real question was who saw her. Stefan didn't. Stefan saw a lead. A cure ally. A girl who could get him to the graveyard. That was the honest read she couldn't reach before. Not because her feelings were hidden. Because Stefan's need had been standing in front of them like a wall. Elena stood. Her legs felt strange, light. "Stefan." He looked up now. "Did Caroline text you?" "No." She almost laughed. "That's the answer. That's always the answer." She left him confused in the booth. Outside, the night air hit her clear. She wasn't torn between two brothers anymore. She only felt one absence, sharp and specific. Damon. The one who burned her journal and told her the truth to her face. The one who actually looked at her. Elena wanted to see him. Now she had to find him.

Chapter 2

Elena found Damon at the far end of the pub, alone in the wood-paneled corner where the regulars never sat. A bottle of amber bourbon stood beside his glass. He was the one who had burned her family journal and then told her the truth to her face. The one who looked at her when Stefan wouldn't. She sat down across from him. Outside the windows, low fog pressed against the glass. "You left my brother," Damon said. He didn't look surprised. He filled the glass and slid it toward her. "Word travels." "I need to ask you something." Elena wrapped her hand around the glass but didn't drink. "You've watched me since the graveyard. You said you waited a hundred and forty-five years. But you didn't wait for me." Damon's jaw tightened. He didn't answer. "You wait for someone who looks like me," Elena said. "Same brown hair. Same eyes. When you look at me, tell me. Am I here, or is she?" The pub noise carried on around them. A kid ran past the bar. A waitress called an order. Damon turned the bottle slowly on the table. "Her name was Catherine," he said. Short. Blunt. "I loved her before your grandmother was born. When I first saw you, yes. I saw her face." Elena's chest went cold. She started to stand. "Sit down." His voice cracked open. "I'm not finished." She waited. "Catherine lied every day I knew her," Damon said. "She played me against Stefan and laughed about it. You told my brother the truth and walked out. Catherine never once did that." He met her eyes. "You stirred your soda and asked yourself hard questions. She never asked herself anything." "That's not proof," Elena said. "No." He pushed the bottle aside so nothing sat between them. "Here's proof. I burned that journal to keep you out of the ritual. To keep you alive. I didn't do that for a memory. A memory can't get hurt." Elena's breath caught. She studied his face and saw no game there. Just a man who had said something he'd held for over a century. "Ask me her eye color," Damon said. "What?" "Catherine's. Right now I can't picture it." He almost smiled. "I can only see yours." Elena believed him. The knot in her chest loosened. For the first time she felt seen, not measured against a dead woman. She drank from the glass and set it down. "Okay," she said. "Then it's you." But as she said it, the fog outside shifted at the window. A blond shape stood in it, still, watching them through the glass. Stefan. He had followed her. And now he knew exactly who she had chosen.
