Chapter 1

Elizabeth White pressed the blue rose into the frozen ground and made herself a promise. She would not die a stranger on this mountain. Somewhere below her cabin, the winter-wood elves sharpened blades against the shape-shifter clans, and the war had lasted longer than her whole life. Elizabeth wanted to end it. She wanted to plant one throne of ice where both peoples could kneel. But she could not unite two peoples when she did not even know her own. She had been three years old when strangers found her crying in a village far from here. No name. No family. Only a wolf that would not leave her side. That same wolf lay near her now, white as snow, its eyes the pale blue of glacier ice. It watched the tree line while she worked her small garden of carrots and cabbage. The rose she buried was no ordinary flower. Its petals shone gold at the tips. Elizabeth had found it growing wild by the frozen waterfall, and old tales said it bloomed only for those born of the mountain's oldest blood. She did not believe the tales. She only believed she was tired of belonging to no one. The wolf stood. Its ears turned toward the great willow at the edge of the lake, the one hung with clusters of bright blue fruit. A figure waited beneath its trailing branches. Elizabeth had not heard footsteps. The stranger was old, wrapped in gray furs, leaning on a staff. An elf, by the sharp ears. But her shadow on the snow shifted like something with four legs. Both bloods, then. Impossible, everyone said. "You planted the bloom," the old woman said. "Only her child could make it root." Elizabeth's hands went still in the cold dirt. "Whose child?" "The last queen of the ice throne. She sent you away the night the war began. To keep you breathing." The old woman touched the willow's blue fruit. "I carried you to that far village myself. I have spent sixteen years finding my way back to you." Elizabeth rose slowly. The wolf pressed against her leg, calm now, as if it had known all along. "You lie. I have no family." "You have two peoples," the old woman said. "Elf and shifter both, in one girl. That is why the flower knows you. That is why the throne is yours." Elizabeth looked at the rose in the ground. Its gold sparkle had spread. New shoots pushed up through the frost, blue leaves unfurling in a ring around her boots. She had wanted a family. She had wanted love. Now she had a crown instead, and a war waiting at the foot of the mountain. She did not feel found. She felt hunted. "Then they will come for me," Elizabeth said. "They are already climbing," the old woman answered.

The old woman's words still hung in the cold air. Elizabeth turned toward the tree line. Down the slope, dark shapes moved through the snow. Elves in gray armor. Beasts with too many teeth. Enemies from both peoples, climbing together toward her cabin. She had no path down that they did not already block. The wolf pressed against her leg and growled low. "I can't fight them all," Elizabeth said. "There's no way past." "Then don't go past," said a voice behind her. "Go under." Elizabeth spun. A young man stood by the willow, close enough to touch, though she had heard nothing. His hair rose like flame, red and gold. Fox ears twitched atop his head. A tail of fire swayed behind his black leather jacket. He looked her age, maybe younger, and he grinned like this was a game. "Shifter," Elizabeth said. Her hand found the small knife at her belt. "Come to hunt me too?" "If I hunted you, you'd be dead." He tilted his head. "Name's Ember. Your mother saved my clan once. I owe that debt to you." He nodded down the mountain. "They'll reach the cabin in minutes. I know a tunnel under the ice. It comes out below them." Elizabeth did not trust him. But the shapes below were closer now. She heard armor clink and claws scrape rock. "Why help me?" she asked. "Because you're both of us." Ember's grin faded. "Elf and shifter in one girl. Maybe you stop the war. Maybe you don't. But I'd rather bet on you than watch them gut you in your garden." A horn blew below. The hunters had seen her. Elizabeth grabbed the small journal from her coat and the golden rose from the ground. She would not leave them. "Show me the tunnel." Ember ran. She followed, the wolf loping beside her. He led her past the frozen waterfall to a crack in the mountain's face. Behind it lay a dark opening, its edges hung with icicles. Two doors waited inside, carved side by side. One pale ice, marked with snowflakes. One dark wood, marked with red roses. The Snow Clan on the left. The Shifter Clan on the right. "The Twin Clan Gate," Ember said. "Old trial. Elves take the left. Shifters take the right. No one takes both." Behind them, boots crunched at the crack. The hunters had found the entrance. Elizabeth looked at the two doors. Then she pressed one hand to each. The ice door groaned. The wood door groaned. Both swung inward together. Gold light spilled from the rose in her fist and lit the tunnel beyond. Ember stared. "That's not possible." "It is now." Elizabeth stepped through both gates at once. The wolf and the fox-boy followed. The doors slammed shut behind them, sealing the hunters out. She had escaped the mountain. But she had also proven, before a shifter's eyes, that the throne answered only to her.

The doors sealed the hunters behind them. Elizabeth stood in the dark tunnel, breathing hard. She still held the golden rose and the small journal against her chest. But relief did not come. She had escaped her cabin, her only home. Now she had nowhere safe to sit and plan her claim. "We can't stop here," Ember said. "The tunnel branches ahead. One path goes nowhere good." The wolf loped forward, then froze. Its blue eyes fixed on a fork in the stone. To the left, plain rock. To the right, a black path. Purple light glowed from cracked stones. Twisting shadows crawled along its edges. Far up the dark path stood the shape of an ice castle, spires sharp as teeth. "That leads to the old queen's seat," Ember said. His grin was gone. "Nobody walks that road anymore. It's cursed." Elizabeth stepped toward the dark path. The rose in her hand warmed and glowed brighter. It pulled her forward. "The rose answers to my blood," she said. "It's showing me the way to the throne." "It's showing you a trap," said a new voice. Elizabeth spun. A figure sat on a low ledge above the fork. She had blue-gray skin and long purple hair tied high. Her green dress spread across the stone. Red lips curved as she watched them. An ice troll, calm as if she had waited hours. "I felt the gate open," the troll said. "Both doors at once. I had to see the girl who did it." She rose and stepped down. "I am Rosalia. I keep these tunnels. And I know a hunted queen when one stumbles into mine." Elizabeth kept the knife close. "Are you friend or enemy?" "Neither yet." Rosalia looked at the dark path, then back. "That road kills the unready. But there is a chamber below, warm and hidden. No elf or shifter finds it. You could rest. You could plan." She tilted her head. "For a price." "What price?" "When you take the throne, remember the troll who sheltered you." Rosalia's smile widened. "My people were forgotten in the old war too." Ember touched Elizabeth's arm. "We don't know her." "We don't know anywhere," Elizabeth said. She had no cabin. She had no map. She had a rose that pointed at a cursed road she was not ready to walk. She looked at Rosalia. "Show me the chamber. If you lie, my wolf smells it." Rosalia laughed and turned toward the plain left path. "Then follow. Bring your fire-boy." Elizabeth followed her into the safe tunnel. The dark road glowed behind her, waiting. She had lost her home. Now she had a shelter, a bargain, and a third face bound to her claim. She opened the journal and wrote one line by the rose's gold light. A troll wants a place in my throne.

Elizabeth sat in Rosalia's hidden chamber and opened her journal by the rose's gold light. She had one flower and one story. Neither would sway hard men. The chamber was warm, but it was too small to hold even three clan leaders. She could not raise a throne from a hole in the rock. "You need more than a rose," Rosalia said. She traced a line on the stone wall. "You need a room they cannot ignore. And you need something old to hold in your hand." "There is nothing old down here but you," Elizabeth said. Rosalia smiled. "There is my brother." A broad shape ducked through the low doorway. His skin was pale blue ice. His purple hair spiked high, streaked with green. He carried a staff crowned with a bright diamond set in red and green stone. A red cat with green eyes trotted at his heel, its fur marked with stones and moss. "Frost Ironhide," Rosalia said. "He kept the old queen's ice castle before the curse fell." Frost looked at Elizabeth the way a smith looks at raw metal. "My sister felt both gates open," he said. "I did not believe her. Show me." Elizabeth set the rose on the floor and pressed her palm above it. "Root," she said. The golden petals opened. A stem grew into the stone. Frost's red eyes narrowed. He set the staff before her. "This staff answered the last queen's blood. It sleeps for anyone else. Hold it." Elizabeth wrapped her hand around the cold shaft. The diamond flared white. The red and green stones glowed. Frost let go of a breath. His cat rubbed against Elizabeth's leg. "It knows you," Frost said. "So does the staff. That is proof no rose alone can give." "Proof means nothing in a chamber this size," Elizabeth said. "I cannot fit the clan leaders here." "No," Frost agreed. "But I know a great room. Green walls. A royal bed. A hearth that still burns. It sits at the top of the dark trail, inside the old castle." Elizabeth's stomach dropped. The rose had pulled her toward that castle since the tunnel. Ember had called the trail cursed. "That road kills the unready," she said. "With the staff, you are not unready." Frost lifted the diamond. "It cut this path once. It can quiet the shadows again. Walk behind me." Rosalia touched Elizabeth's arm. "Take the castle, and you have a hall worthy of a queen. Refuse, and you plan wars from a closet." Elizabeth looked at the rose, the glowing staff, the calm cat. She had wanted proof and a room. Frost offered both, down the one road she feared. She closed her journal. "Lead," she said, and stood. "We take the castle." Frost turned toward the dark trail. The staff lit the black stones purple, and Elizabeth stepped onto the cursed path behind him.

The staff lit the black stones purple, but the trail fought back. Thorned vines crowded the path. Their barbs snagged Elizabeth's sleeves. Frost walked ahead, sure-footed, his ice skin catching the light. His red cat picked between the stones. Then the ground changed. Loose scree slid under Elizabeth's boots. Below the path fell away into black nothing. One wrong step, and the curse would take her. "It moves," Frost said. He did not turn. "The trail hates the living. Keep your eyes on my boots." Elizabeth tried. But the vines pulled tighter, and the stones shifted like water. Her foot slipped. She grabbed a thorned branch. Barbs bit her palm. Blood dripped onto the rock, and the trail seemed to drink it. The path narrowed further. She could not go up. She could not go back. "Frost," she said. "I'm stuck." He stopped. He looked at the cracked stones, then at the staff in her free hand. "You hold the answer," he said. "The staff cut this road once. It knows royal blood. Command it." "I don't know how." "Neither did the old queen, the first time." A dry pause. "She was still alive after." Elizabeth pulled her bleeding hand from the thorns. She gripped the staff with both fists. The diamond glowed cold and white. She thought of a solid road, a road that would hold her weight. "Still," she said. "Hold still." The diamond flared. Ice spread from its head, down the shaft, out across the loose scree. The shifting stones froze together. The thorned vines stiffened and cracked. A smooth, hard path formed under her boots, step by step, climbing toward the castle above. The black nothing below went quiet. Elizabeth breathed. Her hand shook, but the ice held. A voice called from below, sharp and low. "Don't move." Ember climbed into the staff's light, fox ears flat, breathing hard. He was the young shifter who had guided her from her lost cabin, the one who owed her mother a debt. He had warned her away from this very trail. His nose worked the air. "I smelled your blood halfway up," he said. "So did something else." "Something else?" Elizabeth asked. "The hunter." Ember's jaw tightened. He said no more. Frost's red eyes narrowed. "Then we climb fast." He set a hand on the frozen path and pushed upward. Elizabeth followed, staff first. The ice road carried her up the last curve. At the top stood a wide doorway of blue stone. Beyond it waited a hall of ice. A throne rose over long tables. Figures sat frozen at those tables, still as glass, caught mid-feast a lifetime ago. Elizabeth stepped inside. She had her room now, and the staff that made it. But her blood had left a trail up the mountain. And somewhere below, the hunter had caught the scent.
