Chapter 1

Ella Holloway wanted a second kitchen on the far side of Whiteout, where the poorest wanderers froze alone each winter. She had promised herself a warm bowl for every lost soul in this town. But that morning the blizzard buried the roads, and no one could reach her at all. She stood at the window of her big hearth kitchen and watched the snow swallow the path. She had done the math many times. One kitchen could not feed a town split in half by storms. The far side needed its own hearth, its own cots, its own pots. The town council would never fund it unless they trusted her. And trust was hard to win when hungry people couldn't even find her door. Steam rose from the big stove behind her. She had cooked all night. Twenty bowls of barley soup sat ready, and more wandered in her head than she could count. Out there, people shivered in doorways and under eaves. She pressed a mittened hand to the cold glass. Then she stopped waiting. If they could not come to her, she would go to them. Ella dragged a sturdy insulated barrel to the stove and filled it with soup. She clamped the lid tight. The barrel kept heat for hours; it had a little tap near the bottom for pouring. She lashed it to an old wooden sled with rope. On top she set a stack of tin cups and a heel of bread. Before she left, she stepped out back to the rosemary shrub by her door. Frost dusted its green needles white. She stripped a handful and crushed it into the soup for strength and smell. The sharp scent cut through the cold air. She pulled the sled into the storm. Her boots sank to the knee. The wind pushed her back, but she leaned into it and kept walking. She followed the line of buried houses, knocking on each dark door. At the first house, a thin woman and two children opened up. Ella poured hot soup into their cups. Their hands shook around the warmth. House by house, she worked the frozen street. Word spread the way smoke spreads. People waved from windows. By the last door, a small crowd followed her sled, carrying cups, calling her name. She emptied the barrel to the final drop. She trudged home soaked and shaking, but the blizzard had not won. She had reached them. The next morning the storm broke. A council member stood on her step, hat in hand. He had heard how she fed the whole street alone. "The town is talking," he said. "They want to meet you. All of them." Ella wiped flour from her apron and nodded. She had won their attention. Now she had to win a room full of doubters, and keep them fed while she did it.
