Chapter 1Enid Sinclair had been rearranging the same pile of clothes for the third time when she heard footsteps approaching the room. She immediately stopped what she was doing and looked toward the door, her attention caught by the sound of someone dragging a suitcase along the hallway outside. Her stomach fluttered with anticipation. She had known for days that she was getting a new roommate, but somehow the reality of it hadn’t quite settled in until now. Whoever was on the other side of that door was about to become the person she would be sharing practically everything with for the foreseeable future.
She glanced around the room, suddenly noticing every little detail she had added. Her half of the dorm was bright and colorful, filled with pinks, purples, yellows, and blues. Her bed was covered with a fluffy blanket and several decorative pillows, while photographs and little trinkets covered her desk. The large stained-glass window behind the beds filled the room with muted colors despite the gloomy weather outside. Enid had tried to make the space feel warm and welcoming, especially since Nevermore’s old stone walls could make even the nicest room feel a little too much like a crypt.
The footsteps stopped outside.
The door opened.
Enid looked up.
A girl stood in the doorway, one hand wrapped around the handle of a black suitcase. She was small and pale, dressed almost entirely in black, with long dark hair divided into two neat braids. Her face was completely expressionless, her dark eyes immediately scanning the room with a level of scrutiny that made Enid feel as though she were being evaluated.
Enid knew who she was.
Wednesday Addams.
She had heard the name before. Everyone at Nevermore had. There had been plenty of rumors surrounding the Addams girl before she had even arrived. Enid had heard about the piranhas, the explosions, the strange fascination with death, and the fact that Wednesday apparently preferred spending time alone. None of that had prepared her for actually seeing her.
Wednesday’s gaze moved slowly across the room, taking in Enid’s colorful belongings before settling on the other bed.
Enid decided that standing there silently would probably make things more awkward than they already were.
So, naturally, she smiled.
“Oh! You’re my roommate.”
Wednesday looked at her.
Enid waited.
Nothing.
Still smiling, Enid walked a little closer and held out her hand. “I’m Enid Sinclair.”
Wednesday’s eyes dropped to the hand being offered.
For a moment, Enid wondered if she was going to shake it.
She didn’t.
Instead, Wednesday simply said, “Wednesday Addams.”
Enid slowly lowered her hand.
“Right. I know.”
Another silence.
Enid looked at Wednesday’s suitcase, then at the empty side of the room, and finally back at Wednesday. She wasn’t sure what to say next. She had imagined introducing herself, maybe asking where Wednesday was from, maybe telling her about the school. She hadn’t anticipated having to carry the entire conversation by herself.
“So…” Enid gestured toward the room. “This is our room.”
Wednesday looked around again.
“I noticed.”
Enid pressed her lips together to keep herself from laughing.
Okay.
She was definitely going to take some getting used to.
Wednesday stepped farther inside and placed her suitcase beside the empty bed. She began looking over the space that would apparently be hers. Enid watched her quietly, trying to figure out what she was thinking. It was impossible. Wednesday’s face gave absolutely nothing away.
Then Wednesday’s attention shifted toward Enid’s side of the room.
Her eyes lingered on the bright bedding, colorful decorations, stuffed animals, and various little accessories scattered across the shelves.
“You’ve decorated.”
Enid glanced toward her belongings. “Yeah. I like color.”
Wednesday stared at the room for another moment.
“I gathered.”
Enid couldn’t tell whether that was criticism or simply an observation.
She decided not to ask.
Instead, she gave Wednesday another small smile.
“Well… welcome to Nevermore.”
Wednesday looked at her.
“Mhm.”
It was the first remotely polite thing she’d said.
Enid nodded, suddenly unsure of what else to do. Wednesday began unpacking, and Enid returned to her own things, occasionally glancing over at her new roommate.
She still had no idea what to make of Wednesday Addams.
But at least now she had a name.
