Chapter 1

Exodius had crossed three cities in Ethervale, and not one fighter had made him try. He wanted the opponent who could finally show him his own limit. But he could not find that opponent. He stood in a crowded market square, masked and still, watching strong men lift carts and bend iron. None of them mattered. Strength here was a trick for coins. He had no name, no lead, no door to knock on. He was just drifting, and drifting felt worse than losing. A small four-legged creature scampered onto his boot. It had a monkey's shape and sharp, alert eyes. It tugged his glove, then pointed down an alley, chattering. Exodius crouched. "You want me to follow you," he said. The creature darted ahead and stopped, waiting. He followed. The alley opened onto a wide stone door carved with old marks. The creature slipped through a crack. Exodius pushed the door and stepped inside. The space swallowed him. A colossal arena of black, broken stone stretched below a sky of storms and shattered moons. Lava glowed in the cracks of the floor. Carved words sat above the gate: Enter unknown. Leave legendary. On the stands, fighters from many worlds watched. This was the place that only took the deadliest. Three figures stood at the arena's edge, and the crowd watched them, not him. A man in red armor crackled with lightning along his gauntlets. Marcus Thunderstrike turned first. "Another masked one," he said. "They always think the mask makes them special." Beside him stood a man in blue and red, arms folded, calm as stone. Clark Kent studied Exodius the way a judge studies a stranger. "Let him speak," Clark said. "Everyone who walks through that door wants the same thing." The third figure jumped down from the stands and landed close. A woman with red hair and burning eyes grinned. Akira Crimson cracked her knuckles. "I'm bored," she said. "New blood. Good." Exodius felt the glow behind his mask brighten. His pulse did not change, but something in his chest finally woke. Here were three who did not shrink from him. Here, maybe, was the test he had crossed cities to find. "I came to be tested," Exodius said quietly. "Which of you is the strongest?" The three traded looks. Akira laughed. Marcus raised a crackling fist. But Clark lifted a hand and stopped them both. "None of us decides that here," Clark said. "The arena decides. You fight your way up. You want the strongest? You have to climb to him. And no one climbs out alive unless they win every match." The gate behind Exodius sealed shut with a heavy boom. The little creature watched from the wall. Exodius looked at the three fighters, then at the long climb they named. He had wanted a lead. Now he had one. It had locked the only way out behind him.

The gate stayed sealed, and Exodius studied the climb ahead. He had won his first match that morning against a lower-rank fighter. The crowd had gone quiet after. That quiet worried the ranks more than noise. In this arena, a fast climber was a threat to everyone above him. A white-haired fighter dropped from the stands and landed in the cracked stone. He wore a black vest and a red sash, his fists wrapped in tape. This was Ryu Takashi, a ranked fighter who had held his place for years. He did not come alone. Behind him, a dozen lower-ranks spread out in a loose ring, blocking every angle. "You win too easy," Ryu said. "So we don't give you a fair match. We take you now, together." The lower-ranks edged closer. Up on the stands, Marcus Thunderstrike leaned forward, lightning crawling along his gauntlets. He did not step in. He wanted to see what the masked one would do. Exodius turned slowly, counting them. Thirteen fighters. No clean path out. The glow behind his mask brightened. His pulse stayed even. "You could have climbed past me," Exodius said. "Instead you taught them to fear me. Now I have to teach them why." The ring collapsed inward. Exodius moved before the first fist landed. He stepped inside a wide swing and drove his elbow into the man's ribs. The fighter folded. Exodius spun, caught a second by the wrist, and threw him into two more. Three down in a breath. The rest hesitated. Hesitation was a gift. He took it. He did not strike to kill. He struck to end each fighter fast. A palm to the jaw. A knee to the gut. One by one the lower-ranks dropped and did not rise. The stone grew crowded with bodies that groaned and held their wounds. Only Ryu remained. The ranked fighter came in hard, faster than the others, his wrapped fists a blur. Exodius read the pattern after two strikes. He slipped the third, gripped Ryu's arm, and pivoted. Ryu's own force carried him down. Exodius pinned him to the hot stone near a glowing crack. "Yield," Exodius said. Ryu spat. "Yield." Exodius released him and stood. The crowd did not cheer. They stared. In one fight he had broken a ranked fighter and the swarm meant to stop him. The plan to bury him had failed, and it had done the opposite. Now every rank above knew his name. High in the stands, a man in white and gold watched with pale, glowing eyes. He had not moved during the fight. He smiled, slow and certain, like a man who had finally found something worth his time. Marcus Thunderstrike followed that gaze and went still. Exodius felt the weight of that stare settle on him. The swarm was finished. Something far worse had just taken notice.

The bodies were still being dragged away when the white-and-gold figure rose from the stands. Exodius had felt its eyes since the fight ended. He could not fight what he did not understand. So he climbed the broken steps toward it, past fighters who shrank back from his path. He needed one answer: was this the opponent he had come to find, or a trap dressed as one? Marcus Thunderstrike caught his arm halfway up. The lightning around his gauntlets had gone quiet. "Don't," he said. "That thing isn't ranked. It doesn't fight for a place. It only watches." His grip tightened. "Men who walk toward it don't walk back." Exodius pulled free. "Then I need to know why it watches me." He kept climbing. The figure wore white and gold, with three faces turned in three directions and a halo of light above its crown. When Exodius reached the top row, all three faces settled on him at once. The air grew heavy. His mask's glow brightened against the pressure. "You are measuring me," Exodius said. "Why?" "We measure all things." The voice came from everywhere. "We are the Living Tribunal. We weigh what is balanced and what is not. You climb too fast. Your strength has no edge we can find. That is a flaw in the scale." "Then you are not my opponent." "No. We do not fight. We judge." The halo flared. "But you wish to know your limit. We can show you where it begins." Before Exodius could answer, two figures stepped from the shadow of the Tribunal's cloak. One was a small fighter in orange, black hair spiked upward, fists already clenched. The other wore a black suit and an easy smile, hands in his pockets like the arena bored him. "The Tribunal doesn't dirty its own hands," the suited one said. He tilted his head toward the boy in orange. "So it borrows ours. I'm Lucifer Morningstar. The kid is Kaito Tempest. We're here to see if the scale was wrong about you." Kaito did not wait. He blurred forward, a fist aimed at Exodius's ribs. Exodius turned the blow with his forearm and felt the floor crack beneath his heel. The hit was real. It was strong. For the first time since the gate sealed, a strike made him step back. "Good," the Tribunal said. "Now we see." Exodius understood then. The figure was not his final opponent. It was a judge, and it had just set two trials in his path. He had come to find the one adversary who could reveal his limit. Instead he had drawn the attention of something that could name it. He lowered his stance. Kaito grinned and raised his fists. Lucifer stepped back to watch. "Fine," Exodius said. "Judge me."
