Chapter 1

Felix Dox had waited a week for this walk, and now his hands were turning to claws. The woman beside him laughed at something he'd said. He kept his fists jammed in his pockets. Under the blooming tree, its pink petals and green clover bright above them, he felt the wolf climbing up through his skin. His teeth ached. His jaw wanted to break and reshape. He wanted, more than anything, to love someone who could love the whole of him. But no one could love a man who split into a beast in the middle of a sentence. He stepped back. "I have to go," he said. His voice came out rough, half-growl. She frowned. "Felix? Your eyes." He turned and ran before she saw more. Behind a fence he shifted, fur ripping through his shirt, and he pressed his snout to the dirt and hated himself. He found the old wolf near the willow house, the elder the whole village called on for trouble like this. Greymane Nightpaw leaned on his carved staff and did not look up from the small teal creature curled at his feet. The thing had a pug's wrinkled face and a rounded body. It watched Felix with wide, calm eyes. "You shift when you feel too much," Greymane said. Not a question. "Every time," Felix said. "I can't court anyone. I change and I scare them off." Greymane finally looked at him. His yellow eyes were sharp under gray fur. "You think the wolf is your enemy. That's why it wins." He nodded at the little alien. "That one feels everything I feel. Fear. Calm. It doesn't lie to me. Neither does the wolf." "Then teach me to cage it." "No." Greymane struck the staff on the ground. "You don't cage a river. You learn its current." He gripped Felix's wrist hard. "Feel it come. Don't fight. Name it out loud." Felix shut his eyes. The wolf rose at once, hot and fast. His fingers curled. "Name it," Greymane snapped. "Fear," Felix said. "I'm afraid she'll run." "Again." "Afraid I'll always be alone." The heat kept climbing. Then, strangely, it slowed. The teal creature waddled over and leaned against his leg, warm and steady. Felix breathed. His claws stopped growing. His jaw stayed his own. He opened his eyes. His hands were hands. Greymane released him. "There. You didn't stop the shift. You stayed with it." He picked up his staff. "Do that when your heart pounds, not when it's calm. That's harder. Panic feeds it faster than anything." Felix flexed his fingers. For the first time, the wolf felt like a part of him he could hold. "I can go back to her," he said. Greymane's ears flattened. "You can. But控制 in front of a stranger who already saw your eyes? That's a different test." He turned toward the willow house. "She's telling the village what she saw right now."

Chapter 2

Greymane's warning stayed with Felix all week. He could hold the wolf when his heart was calm. But a tender moment, a real one, would test that hold. He needed to feel his heart pound and stay a man. So he walked the woods until he found someone who might make it happen. He found her at the edge of a mossy cabin, staring into the trees. Her fur was white as snow, and she stood so still she nearly vanished against the frost. She turned before he spoke. Her ears were up, alert. "You're a wolf," she said. "I smelled it." "Felix," he said. "Felix Dox." "Luna Winterpaw. My pack is lost in the Frostwood. The paths close at the solstice. I can't find them alone." She said it flat, like a list. He should have walked on. Instead he stayed. They searched the treeline together until dark. She moved fast and quiet, and he kept up. When she slipped on wet moss, he caught her arm. Her hand closed over his. She looked up at him, and something warm cracked open in his chest. The wolf rose at once. His teeth ached. His fingers curled toward claws against her sleeve. This was the test, and he was failing it. Luna felt him shaking. "Your hand," she said. She did not pull away. Greymane's words came back. Don't fight. Name it. "I'm afraid," Felix said out loud. His voice cracked. "I'm afraid you'll run when I change." Luna's eyes stayed steady. "Say it again." "I'm afraid to want this." He breathed. "I'm afraid to want you." The heat slowed. It did not stop, but it slowed. His claws pulled back. His jaw held. He stood there, half-shifted, breathing hard, her hand still on his. He waited for her to flee. She looked at his eyes, gold now, then human again. "You held it," she said. "I saw." "You're not afraid." "I hide in blizzards. My own pack can't track me." She let go of his hand at last. "A wolf inside a man doesn't scare me." Felix laughed, shaky and real. He had done it. His heart had pounded, and he had stayed himself. The panic had risen and he had named it down. He could court someone now. He could love and not run. Then Luna stepped back toward the dark trees. "The solstice is in three days," she said. "After that the Frostwood shuts. My pack dies in there if I don't reach them." Felix looked at the forest swallowing the last light. He had found someone who saw both his sides and stayed. And she was about to walk into a place that ate wolves whole. "Then we go tomorrow," he said. "Both of us." Luna studied him. "You don't know the Frostwood." "No," Felix said. "But I'm not letting you go in alone."
