Chapter 1

Fiona stood at the base of the tower, craning her neck to see the top floor. She needed a space that could do two things at once. Track storm fronts moving across Whitehaven. Watch every camera feed from the contestants below. If this show was going to beat the competition, she couldn't miss a single moment of drama. The lodge sat fifty yards away, warm light spilling from its windows. She walked toward it, boots crunching through snow. Inside, the production crew had already mounted screens along one wall. Weather monitors lined the opposite side, still displaying default patterns. Fiona pulled a rolling chair to the center of the main room and sat down. From here she could see everything. A low pressure system building to the north. Two contestants arguing near the fire pit on camera three. She smiled and reached for her headset. This was going to work.

Chapter 2

Fiona had been in position for three hours when the first alert blinked red on her weather monitor. She leaned forward in her chair, studying the pressure gradient. The front was moving faster than the forecast predicted. Much faster. She picked up the stuffed polar bear that sat on the console, a prop left behind by a contestant during auditions. Her fingers pressed into its soft fur as she watched the screens. Camera seven showed Rafael building a shelter in the exposed valley. Camera nine caught Mia and Priya hiking toward the ridge. The storm would hit them in ninety minutes, maybe less. She could pull them all back now, lose the footage of them racing against weather they didn't know was coming. Or she could wait thirty more minutes and capture genuine panic. Her thumb traced the bear's worn ear. The ratings would be incredible. She set the bear down and reached for her radio. "All contestants, this is base. Emergency recall. Return to the lodge immediately." The words cost her the best footage of the season, but she'd made her choice. She was still a meteorologist, even if the network wanted her to forget it. The screens showed contestants turning back, confused but compliant. Rafael abandoned his half-built shelter without knowing how close he'd come to needing it. Fiona watched them file toward safety and felt something shift inside her. She'd chosen people over ratings this time, but the network would expect different next time. She couldn't play scientist and showrunner forever. Eventually she'd have to pick one.

Chapter 3

The storm hit exactly when Fiona predicted it would. She watched the wind speeds climb on her monitors, tracking the system as it tore across Whitehaven's exposed valley. The contestants were safe in the lodge, confused and restless. They'd be angry about the recall until they saw what was coming. By morning, the proof lay scattered in the valley below. Rafael's shelter was gone, reduced to broken logs half-buried in snow. Camera twelve captured the destruction in sharp detail. The structure had collapsed within twenty minutes of the storm's arrival, its roof caved in like paper. Fiona saved the footage to three different drives before calling the network. She told them the storm destroyed what would have been a contestant death, that her meteorology skills had just created the most powerful safety narrative in reality television history. The executive producer wanted the footage in tonight's broadcast with dramatic voiceover. Fiona agreed, watching Rafael stare at the ruins through the lodge window. He didn't know yet that his survival was about to become the show's biggest selling point. She'd saved his life and turned it into content. The ratings would prove her meteorology background was the best investment the network never knew they were making.
